1. Characterization of the DNA-Binding Properties of the Cyanobacterial Transcription Factor NtcA
Abstract : Nitrogen is an essential building block of proteins and nucleic acids and, therefore, crucial for the biosphere. Nearly 79 % of the air consists of nitrogen, but in the form of nitrogen gas (N2), which cannot be utilized by most organisms. READ MORE

2. A biophysical study of nucleic acid interactions with analogues and drugs
Abstract : work presented in this thesis concerns studies on the physicochemical nature of interactions between nucleic acids and small ligands. The outcome of such studies can yield insights at a molecular level into the physiological mechanisms of action of biologically active nucleic-acid binding molecules. READ MORE

3. Substrate water binding to the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II
Abstract : Oxygenic photosynthesis in plants, algae and cyanobacteria converts sunlight into chemical energy. In this process electrons are transferred from water molecules to CO2 leading to the assembly of carbohydrates, the building blocks of life. READ MORE

4. Computational Studies of Nitrogenase
Abstract : AbstractNitrogenase is the only enzyme that can convert the inert nitrogen molecule to ammonia, so that it can be used for biomass production and in biosynthetic pathways. It contains a complicated acitve site, composed of eight metal ions, nine sulfur ions and one carbide ion (the FeMo cluster). READ MORE

5. Studies on oligonucleotide adducts formed from 7,8-dihydroxy-9,10-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo[A]pyrene stereoisomers
Abstract : The widespread environmental pollutant benzo[a]pyrene (BP), is formed from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and is mutagenic and carcinogenic after metabolic activation to bay-region diol epoxides and subsequent covalent binding to DNA. The metabolic activation pathway to diol epoxides is via BP-7,8-oxide and BP-7,8-dihydrodiol to yield preferentially 7R,8S-dihydroxy-9S,lOR-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo[a]py- rene [(+)-anti-BPDE] and to lesser extents, 7R,8S-dihydroxy-9R,lOS-epoxy-BP [(-)-syn-BPDE], 7S,8R- dihydroxy-9S,lOR-epoxy-BP [(+)-syn-BPDE] and 7S,8R-dihydroxy-9R,lOS-epoxy-BP [(-)-anti-BPDE].
