1. Synthesis and Studies of NADH Models: Stereoselective Reductions and Host-Guest Properties
Abstract : The aim of the project has been to synthesise macrocyclic NADH models and to study them as reducing agents and hosts. Three types of macrocyclic NADH models have been synthesised. They consist of the same subunits; a chiral unit, a nicotinamide unit and an aromatic spacer. READ MORE

2. Biochemical Control Aspects in Lignin Polymerization
Abstract : Lignins are produced by all vascular plants and they represent one of the most abundant groups of biopolymers in nature. Lignin chemistry research, which has been of great importance for the progress of pulping technologies, has been plagued by the difficulties of its isolation and characterization. READ MORE

3. Gene fusion in protein engineering : design of novel peptides and bifunctional enzymes
Abstract : The gene fusion technique is widely used in protein engineering and in this thesis it constitutes the basis of both the construction of artificial bifunctional enzymes and the display of two novel peptides. Artificial bifunctional enzymes have been used as model systems in the studies of native multifunctional enzymes and proximity effects within these complexes. READ MORE

4. Glycolytic oscillations in individual yeast cells
Abstract : Oscillations in the concentration of yeast glycolytic intermediates have been intensively studied since the 1950s, but these studies have so far been limited to observations of average oscillatory behavior in synchronized cultures. Hence, it has remained unknown whether the onset of oscillations is a collective property of the population which requires a high cell density, or if individual cells can oscillate also in isolation. 5. NADH:quinone oxidoreductase: the black box of the respiratory chain
Abstract : Complex I or NADH:quinone oxidoreductase the largest, most complex and least understood of the five membrane-bound enzyme complexes constituting the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The enzyme is present in all types of organisms, from bacteria to mammals. READ MORE
