6. Gene fusion in protein engineering : design of novel peptides and bifunctional enzymes
Abstract : The gene fusion technique is widely used in protein engineering and in this thesis it constitutes the basis of both the construction of artificial bifunctional enzymes and the display of two novel peptides. Artificial bifunctional enzymes have been used as model systems in the studies of native multifunctional enzymes and proximity effects within these complexes. READ MORE

7. Glycolytic oscillations in individual yeast cells
Abstract : Oscillations in the concentration of yeast glycolytic intermediates have been intensively studied since the 1950s, but these studies have so far been limited to observations of average oscillatory behavior in synchronized cultures. Hence, it has remained unknown whether the onset of oscillations is a collective property of the population which requires a high cell density, or if individual cells can oscillate also in isolation. 8. Single Cell Studies of Glycolytic Oscillations Using Microfluidics and Optical Tweezers
Abstract : The complex set of reactions in metabolism has been extensively studied in populations with millions of cells, but much information can still be gained by studying the heterogeneous metabolic behaviour in individual cells. The first part of energy metabolism is called glycolysis and is very similar in mammalian cells, such as human cells, and in yeast cells. READ MORE

10. Synthesis and Studies of NADH Models: Stereoselective Reductions and Host-Guest Properties
Abstract : The aim of the project has been to synthesise macrocyclic NADH models and to study them as reducing agents and hosts. Three types of macrocyclic NADH models have been synthesised. They consist of the same subunits; a chiral unit, a nicotinamide unit and an aromatic spacer. READ MORE
