1. Sorption and transformation of polar pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment studied by hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction
Abstract : This thesis addresses the application of hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction as a simple, efficient and environmentally friendly tool to study the fate of four common anti-inflammatory drugs (ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and ibuprofen) during wastewater treatment. Initial experiments verified that this technique is applicable on aqueous as well as suspensions of solid samples, thus greatly simplifying the sample preparation. READ MORE

2. The response to mechanical distension of the non-pregnant human uterus in vivo
Abstract : The ability of the uterus to contract in response to mechanical distension has been utilized in the development of a method, hysterometry, for the quantification of hormonal and pharmacological effects on the human myometrium in vivo. The method has been built up with due consideration for laws from mechanics of materials and hydrodynamics. READ MORE

3. Pharmaceutical compounds; a new challenge for wastewater treatment plants
Abstract : Analytical analyses conducted at the Himmerfjärden WWTP (285.000 PE connected) identified 70 pharmaceutical compounds belonging to different therapeutic classes. Such organic micropollutants at low detected concentration range of µg - ng l-1 did not affect the treatment processes at WWTP. READ MORE

4. Estrogen receptor and multixenobiotic resistance genes in freshwater fish and snails: identification and expression analysis after pharmaceutical exposure
Abstract : Pharmaceuticals are today released into aquatic environments where they can interfere with organisms' biological processes. The general research objective was to analyze how aquatic freshwater organisms are affected by exposure to pharmaceuticals that are categorized by the EU as potential risk factors to the environment (i.e. READ MORE

5. Perspectives on Biofilms for the Removal of Organic Micropollutants in Wastewater
Abstract : The use of biofilms to improve the removal of organic micropollutants in waste¬water treatment plants (WWTPs) has been investigated. The work is divided into two parts. In the first part, the use of biofilms for the biological degradation of micro¬pollutants was investigated. READ MORE
