6. Characterization of Novel Solute Carriers in Humans, Mice and Flies : Solute Carriers in a Broad and Narrow Perspective
Abstract : The solute carrier family is the largest family of membrane-bound transporters in humans, with 430 members divided into 65 subfamilies. They transport various substrates across lipid barriers and are vital for absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion in all cell types in the body. READ MORE

7. Stochastic modelling and analysis of early mouse development
Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to model and describe dynamical events for biological cells using statistical and mathematical tools. The thesis includes five papers that all relate to stochastic modelling of cells. READ MORE

8. Studies on the Role of Apoptosis in Kidney Diseases
Abstract : Apoptosis is one of the most common types of cell death. Under physiological conditions, it plays an essential role in removal of damaged and potentially harmful cells. Excessive apoptosis has however been linked to a number of diseases including proteinuric kidney disease and DKD, and is believed to enhance the disease progression. READ MORE

9. Influences of in vivo and in vitro loading on the proteoglycan synthesis of articular cartilage chondrocytes
Abstract : In this study, the biosynthesis of proteoglycans (PGs) was examined in articular cartilage of canine hip joint after long-distance running experiment and in bovine chondrocyte cultures during in vitro loading with hydrostatic pressure. In addition, new assays were developed for more sensitive quantitation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and PGs. READ MORE

10. Molecular and Cellular Complexity of Glioma : Highlights on the Double-Edged-Sword of Infiltration Versus Proliferation and the Involvement of T Cells
Abstract : Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common and malignant brain tumor, is characterized by high molecular and cellular heterogeneity within and among tumors. Parameters such as invasive growth, infiltration of immune cells and endothelial proliferation contribute in a systemic manner to maintain the malignancy. READ MORE
