11. Quantum transport and spin effects in lateral semiconductor nanostructures and graphene
Abstract : This thesis studies electron spin phenomena in lateral semi-conductor quantum dots/anti-dots and electron conductance in graphene nanoribbons by numerical modelling. In paper I we have investigated spin-dependent transport through open quantum dots, i.e., dots strongly coupled to their leads, within the Hubbard model. READ MORE

12. Mesoscopic thin film superconductors - A computational framework
Abstract : Motivated by experiments on superconductors in the microscopic regime and the realization of small superconducting devices such as qubits, we initiate a computational project in the form of a numerical simulation package to model and predict the behavior of these type of systems. It is a multidisciplinary endeavor in that it employs theory, computational science, software design, and to some extent new visualization techniques. READ MORE

13. Theoretical prediction of properties of atomistic systems : Density functional theory and machine learning
Abstract : The prediction of ground state properties of atomistic systems is of vital importance in technological advances as well as in the physical sciences. Fundamentally, these predictions are based on a quantum-mechanical description of many-electron systems. READ MORE

14. Neural Networks Applications and Electronics Development for Nuclear Fusion Neutron Diagnostics
Abstract : This thesis describes the development of electronic modules for fusion neutron spectroscopy as well as several implementations of artificial neural networks (NN) for neutron diagnostics for the Joint European Torus (JET) experimental reactor in England. The electronics projects include the development of two fast light pulser modules based on Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for the calibration and stability monitoring of two neutron spectrometers (MPRu and TOFOR) at JET. 15. Quantum scattering and interaction in graphene structures
Abstract : Since its isolation in 2004, that resulted in the Nobel Prize award in 2010, graphene has been the object of an intense interest, due to its novel physics and possible applications in electronic devices. Graphene has many properties that differ it from usual semiconductors, for example its low-energy electrons behave like massless particles. READ MORE
