  1. 16. Strong Light-Matter Interactions and Formation of Hybrid States at the Nanoscale

    Author : Martin Wersäll; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; coherent interactions; localized surface plasmon resonances; strong coupling;

    Abstract : Noble metallic nanoparticles, which support localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR), offer a variety of potential scientific and industrial utilizations. Due to their remarkable ability to confine light at nanoscale dimensions, far below the optical diffraction limit, plasmonic nanoparticles enable intricate light manipulations, which may be performed and exploited for a wide range of future revolutionary applications. Abstract : Taking into account the technological demand for the controlled preparation of atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with well-defined properties, the present thesis is focused on the investigation of the role of the underlying metal substrate in the process of building GNRs using bottom-up strategy and on the changes in the electronic structure of GNRs induced by the GNR-metal interaction. The combination of surface sensitive synchrotron-radiation-based spectroscopic techniques and scanning tunneling microscopy with in situ sample preparation allowed to trace evolution of the structural and electronic properties of the investigated systems. 3. 18. Nonlinearity mitigation in phase-sensitively amplified optical transmission links

    Author : Kovendhan Vijayan; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; copier-PSA; nonlinearity mitigation; phase-sensitive amplifier; self-phase modulation mitigation; low-noise amplification; optical transmission; crossphase modulation mitigation;

    Abstract : The fundamental limitations in fiber-optic communication are caused by optical amplifier noise and the nonlinear response of the optical fibers. The quantum-limited noise figure of erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) or any phase-insensitive amplifier is 3 dB. READ MORE

    Abstract : The fundamental limitations in fiber-optic communication are caused by optical amplifier noise and the nonlinear response of the optical fibers. The quantum-limited noise figure of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) or any phase-insensitive amplifier is 3 dB. READ MORE

  5. 20. Multimodal Imaging of Anisotropic Hierarchical Materials

    Author : Adrian Rodriguez Palomo; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biomaterials; Hierarchical Materials; Multimodal Imaging; Birefringence; X-Ray Scattering;

    Abstract : The thesis is focused on studying the nanostructure of natural and synthetic hierarchical materials with biological applications, using X-ray scattering imaging and birefringence microscopy. The term "hierarchical materials" is used for structures composed of sub-units organised in different length scales that create the building blocks for the next level. READ MORE
