6. Partial methane oxidation from electronic structure calculations
Abstract : Investigating catalytic reactions with computational methods is a powerful approach to understand fundamental aspects of catalytic reactions and find ways to guide catalytic design. Partial methane oxidation is one example of a reaction with intriguing challenges, where a detailed atomistic approach may help to unravel the bottlenecks of this, as of yet, inefficient reaction. 7. Methane oxidation over palladium oxide. From electronic structure to catalytic conversion
Abstract : Understanding how catalysts work down to the atomic level can provide ways to improve chemical processes on which our contemporary economy is heavily reliant. The oxidation of methane is one such example, which is important from an environmental point of view. READ MORE

8. Unravelling Sensitisation and Quenching Pathways in Lanthanide Luminophores
Abstract : Lanthanide (Ln) ions find use in cellular detection and probing of many analytes, owing to their unique photophysical properties. However, to make the Ln emission efficient, one has to develop a light-harvesting antenna, which is an organic chromophore that absorbs and transfers energy to the Ln. READ MORE

9. Novel electrode and photoelectrode materials for hydrogen production based on molecular catalysts
Abstract : The PhD project focussed on the application of a cobalt tetraazamacrocyclic complex, in the literature commonly referred to as [Co(CR)Cl2]+ as a molecular catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This was within the broader scope of the EU MSCA H2020 ITN ‘eSCALED’ project, which primarily aimed to create artificial leaf devices for the storage of solar energy in chemical fuels and, as part of this, sought the development of novel bio-inspired and scalable materials. 10. Experimental and quantum-chemical studies of the surface interactions between organic molecules and nanocrystals of (a) RE2O3 (RE = Y or Gd); and (b) TiOb2
Abstract : The increasing interest for using nanocrystals in bio-medical and optical applications has highlighted the need of molecular functionalisation of nanocrystals. Knowledge of how to attach molecules to the nanocrystal surface is a key factor. READ MORE
