  1. 21. Design and Synthesis of Sialic Acid Conjugates as Inhibitors of EKC-causing Adenoviruses

    Author : Susanne Johansson; Jan Kihlberg; Mikael Elofsson; Stefan Oscarson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sialic acid; sialylmimetics; sialylation; multivalency; glycoconjugates; adenovirus; antiviral agents; epidemic keratoconjunctivitis; Bioorganic chemistry; Bioorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : The combat against viral diseases has been, and still is, a major challenge in the field of drug development. Viruses are intracellular parasites that use the host cell ma-chinery for their replication and release. Therefore it is difficult to target and destroy the viral particle without disturbing the essential functions of the host cell. READ MORE

  2. 22. Development of 2-Pyridone-based central fragments : Affecting the aggregation of amyloid proteins

    Author : Magnus Sellstedt; Fredrik Almqvist; Petri Pihko; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 2-pyridone; central fragment alteration; multi-component reactions; directed diversity-oriented synthesis; peptidomimetics; amyloid; protein aggregation; pilicide; curlicide; Biorganic Chemistry; bioorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : There are many applications of small organic compounds, e.g. as drugs or as tools to study biological systems. Once a compound with interesting biological activity has been found, medicinal chemists typically synthesize small libraries of compounds with systematic differences to the initial “hit” compound. 3. 23. Density functional studies of EPR and NMR parameters of paramagnetic systems

    Author : Lyudmyla G. Telyatnyk; Olav Vahtras; Martin Kaupp; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; spin-restricted DFT; restricted-unrestricted approach; EPR spin Hamiltonian parameters; NMR spin Hamiltonian parameters; Bioorganic chemistry; Bioorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : Experimental methods based on the magnetic resonance phenomenon belong to the most widely used experimental techniques for investigations of molecular and electronic structure. The difficulty with such experiments, usually a proper interpretation of data obtained from high-resolution spectra, opens new challenges for pure theoretical methods. READ MORE

  4. 24. Development and characterisation of protecting groups that enhance the solubility of synthetic peptides : Methods to improve the aqueous solubility of hydrophobic peptides

    Author : Karolina Wahlström; Anders Undén; Fernando Albericio; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solid phase peptide synthesis; Fmoc chemistry; solubility problems; tryptophan; tyrosine; Nmec; Nmbu; Bioorganic chemistry; Bioorganisk kemi; Neurochemistry and Molecular Neurobiology; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi;

    Abstract : Chemical synthesis of peptides is generally performed by solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). Although SPPS is a rapid and convenient method to prepare peptides, the major methodological problem in SPPS is related to solvation/solubility. READ MORE

  5. 25. Conformationally Constrained Oligonucleotides for RNA Targeting

    Author : Qing Li; Jyoti Chattopadhyaya; Li-He Zhang; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; conformationally constrained nucleoside; antisense oligonucleotide; RNA affinity; nuclease stability; RNase H; RNA degradation; Chemistry with specialization in Bioorganic Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot bioorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : A short oligonucleotide sequence as in a single-stranded antisense oligo nucleotides (AON) or in double-stranded small interfering RNAs (siRNA) can modulate the gene expression by targeting against the cellular mRNA, which can be potentially exploited for therapeutic purposes in the treatment of different diseases. In order to improve the efficacy of oligonucleotide-based drugs, the problem of target affinity, nuclease stability and delivery needs to be addressed. READ MORE
