11. On HIV-1 infection in the central nervous system
Abstract : HIV-1 (hereafter referred to as HIV) is a neurotropic virus that invades the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS is then susceptible to an acute infection and later to CNS opportunistic diseases and AIDS dementia complex (ADC). HIV does not infect the neurons, and neuropathogenesis is largely mediated by the immune system. READ MORE

14. Diagnosis and monitoring of sport-related concussion
Abstract : Background: Concussions are one of the most common sport-related injuries and it is known that they cause axonal and glial damage, and that there are risks for long-term effects. The aims of this thesis were to find possible methods, which may help clinicians to diagnose and monitor mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), analyse the APOEε4 allele genotype that has been associated with poor outcome after TBI and evaluate the relationship between neuropsychological assessment and brain injury biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). 15. Brain parenchymal fraction in healthy individuals and in clinical follow-up of multiple sclerosis
Abstract : Background Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease characterised by inflammatory damage to the central nervous system (CNS). Accumulated CNS injury can be quantified as brain atrophy, definable as a reduction in brain parenchymal fraction (BPF). BPF correlate with disability in MS and is used routinely as an endpoint in clinical trials. READ MORE
