  1. 1. Effects of nitric oxide on hemostasis with special attention to platelet function

    Author : Johanna Albert; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : nitric oxide; bleeding time; platelet aggregation; platelet secretion; P-selectin expression; flow cytometry; NG-monomethyl-L-arginine; L-NMMA; nasal air; skin perfusion; GSNO; humans;

    Abstract : Endogenous endothelium-derived NO provides a continuous vasodilating effect, but may also in humans have an antithrombotic effect, which is exerted by inhibition of platelet function and by vasodilatation. Inhalation of NO selectively relaxes the pulmonary vascular bed, without causing systemic hypotension. READ MORE

  2. 2. Human polymorphonuclear granulocytes in inflammation : studies with an emphasis on nitric oxide

    Author : Gerd Lärfars; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Polymorphonuclear granulocytes; inflammation; nitric oxide; leukotrienes; tumor necrois factor; rheumatoid arthritis; interferon-gamma; chronic granulomatous disease;

    Abstract : The function of the polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocyte (PMN) is of vital importance in inflammation. For the defense against infections PMNs are armored with different weapons such as chemotaxis, phagocytosis and production of cytotoxic substances. READ MORE

  3. 3. Regional pulmonary vasoreactivity, with special reference to nitric oxide, prostacyclin and body posture

    Author : Danguolé Rimeika; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Regional pulmonary perfusion; nitric oxide; prostacyclin; NOS-inhibition; COX-inhibition; shunt; one-lung ventilation;

    Abstract : The primary aim of the study was to investigate possible mechanisms behind the improved arterial oxygenation in ventilator-treated patients with acute lung injury (ALI) or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) when turned into prone position. A secondary aim was to discover new knowledge of possible importance for treatment of patients with oxygenation problems in intensive care and during anesthesia. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mechanisms of apoptosis in secretory and neuronal cells : role of oxidative stress and calcium overload

    Author : Maria Ankarcrona; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Apoptosis is a widespread physiological mechanism to regulate tissue homeostasis both during development and in adult organs. However, the cell deletion program can be inappropriately activated or suppressed under pathological conditions. READ MORE
