  1. 1. Interactions between platelets and complement with implications for the regulation at surfaces

    Author : Per H. Nilsson; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; John Lambris; Ian Nicholls; Berhane Ghebrehiwet; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; complement system activation; regulation ; platelets activation; regulation ; biomaterials; biocompatibility; chondroitin sulfate-A; apyrase; C1q; C3; factor H; C4BP; ADP; Biomedical Sciences; Biomedicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Disturbances of host integrity have the potential to evoke activation of innate immunologic and hemostatic protection mechanisms in blood. Irrespective of whether the activating stimulus is typically immunogenic or thrombotic, it will generally affect both the complement system and platelets to a certain degree. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studying abroad : exploring mobility, expectations and experiences among mobile students

    Author : Per A. Nilsson; Kerstin Westin; Dieter K. Müller; Jan-Henrik Nilsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; student mobility; inbound; outbound; exchange students; Sweden; Social and Economic Geography; kulturgeografi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the experiences and outcomes of temporarily studying abroad, via follow-up studies, aiming to explore international student mobility with a focus on the individual’s perspective. The specific research questions, dealing with the individual students’ expectations and experiences, are addressed in three papers. READ MORE

  3. 3. Heterotopic Ossification : Clinical and Experimental Studies on Risk Factors, Etiology and Inhibition by Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs

    Author : Per-Erik Persson; Olle Nilsson; Per Aspenberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Heterotopic ossification; Hip prosthesis; NSAIDs; Prophylaxis; Prosthesis loosening; Reoperation; Animal model; Bone formation; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, occurrence of heterotopic ossification (HO) following total hip arthroplasty (THA) was studied. Preventive effects and complications with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were analyzed. Experimental investigations on bone formation were employed to gain insight to the mechanism of NSAIDs action on bone.(I). READ MORE

  4. 4. Sami lifestyle and health : epidemiological studies from northern Sweden

    Author : Lena Maria Nilsson; Bethany Van Guelpen; Anna Winkvist; Per Lenner; Per Sjölander; Peter Bjerregaard; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sami people; traditional food; traditional lifestyle; the VIP cohort; mortality; cancer; cardiovascular disease; folkhälsa; Public health;

    Abstract : The aim of this PhD thesis was to expand the current knowledge of “traditional Sami” diet and lifestyle, and to test aspects of the Sami diet and lifestyle, specifically dietary pattern, macronutrient distribution and coffee consumption, in population-based epidemiological studies of mortality and incident cardiovascular disease and cancer in a general population.In Paper I, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 elderly Sami concerning their parent’s lifestyle and diet 50-70 years ago. 5. 5. The role of the thromboinflammatory response under hemolytic conditions : pathophysiological mechanisms and therapeutic inhibition

    Author : Alexandra Gerogianni; Per H. Nilsson; Camilla Mohlin; Tom Eirik Mollnes; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Mihály Józsi; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hemolysis; heme; thromboinflammation; biomaterials; complement inhibition; LVAD; IONPs; Biomedical Sciences; Biomedicinsk vetenskap; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : In blood circulation, the complement and the coagulation cascades, together with platelets and endothelial cells form a complex network of crosstalk. When dysregulated, these interactions can lead to inflammation in combination with thrombosis (thromboinflammation) and the manifestation of pathophysiological complications. READ MORE
