1. Evolution of Plants : a mathematical perspective
Abstract : The Earth harbors around 300 000 plant species. The rich and complex environment provided by plants is considered a key factor for the extraordinary diversity of the terrestrial fauna by, for example, providing food and shelter. READ MORE

2. Functional Traits in Sphagnum
Abstract : Peat mosses (Sphagnum) are ecosystem engineers that largely govern carbon sequestration in northern hemisphere peatlands. I investigated functional traits in Sphagnum species and addressed the questions: (I) Are growth, photosynthesis and decomposition and the trade-offs between these traits related to habitat or phylogeny?, (II) Which are the determinants of decomposition and are there trade-offs between metabolites that affect decomposition?, (III) How do macro-climate and local environment determine growth in Sphagnum across the Holarctic?, (IV) How does N2 fixation vary among different species and habitats?, (V) How do species from different microtopographic niches avoid or tolerate desiccation, and are leaf and structural traits adaptations to growth high above the water table?Photosynthetic rate and decomposition in laboratory conditions (innate growth and decay resistance) were related to growth and decomposition in their natural habitats. 3. Deep Learning for Active Fire Detection Using Multi-Source Satellite Image Time Series
Abstract : In recent years, climate change and human activities have caused increas- ing numbers of wildfires. Earth observation data with various spatial and temporal resolutions have shown great potential in detecting and monitoring wildfires. READ MORE

4. Biophysical and Human Controls of Land Productivity under Global Change : Development and Demonstration of Parsimonious Modelling Techniques
Abstract : Net primary production (NPP) serves as an indicator for plant-based resources such as food, timber and biofuel for human appropriation. It is defined by the annual production of plant matter and is mainly controlled by climate and human activities. Climate change in combination with human activities is altering NPP. READ MORE

5. Primary Production in African Drylands : Quantifying Supply and Demand Using Earth Observation and Socio-ecological Data
Abstract : The human-environment connection in the mostly rural drylands of sub-Saharan Africa forms a complex, interlinked system that provides ecosystem services. This system is susceptible to climatic variability that impacts the supply of its products, and high population growth, which impacts the demand for these products. READ MORE
