  1. 1. On the actions of neurotrophic factors on the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla

    Author : Petter Förander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Neural crest; chromaffin cells; neurotrophic factors; NGF; NT-3; NT4; CNTF; GDNF; TGFß; FGF2; glucocorticoids; Intra oculartransplantation ; primary cultures; neurite outgrowth;

    Abstract : Chromaffin cells producing adrenaline or noradrenaline are the predominant cell type in the adrenal medulla, but ganglion cells and Schwann cells are also present. All cells of the adrenal medulla are derived from the neural crest, which is a transient neuroectoderm-derived embryonic structure. READ MORE

  2. 2. Spinal cord grafts : interaction with cografts and effects of trophic factors

    Author : Katarzyna Trok; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : cord injury; spinal cord transplants; regeneration; GDNF; neurotrophins; CNTF; 5HT; immunohistochemistryKatarzyna Trok; 1996ISBN 91-6;

    Abstract : Spinal cord injury is common in the modern society, often afflicts young individuals, and often has devastating consequences. The present work studies possibilities to obtain better conditions for regeneration of the transected spinal cord in rats, conditions under which spinal cord grafts are able to establish structural and functional connections with "natural" targets, and effects of a series of neurotrophic factors on spinal cord graft survival and growth. 3. 3. Regulation of neurotrophic signaling molecules in motor neurons, primary sensory neurons and target tissues in senescence

    Author : Yu Ming; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Aging; dorsal root ganglion; spinal cord; muscle; neurotrophins; GFRalpha; Ret; FGF-2; gp 130; CNTF; LIF; IL-6; receptors; protein; mRNA; glia; axon dystrophy; demyelination.;

    Abstract : A hallmark of senescence is sensorimotor impairment, characterized by gait disturbance, deficits in postural control, and muscle weakness. The object of this thesis work was to elucidate some of the molecular basis underlying these disturbances, mainly referring to the occurrence of characteristic changes in gene-expression pattern, especially, alterations in trophic signaling associated with the phenotypic changes seen in motoneurons as well as primary sensory neurons and target muscles during aging. 4. 4. Regulation of neurotrophins and their receptors : molecular aspects and functional implications

    Author : Tuija Salin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : neurotrophin; nerve growth factor; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; neurotrophin-3; neurotrophin-4; glia; gliosis; neuron; tyrosine kinase receptor; transgenic; null mutation; gene; exon; intron; mRNA;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to study the regulation of neurotrophins and their receptors in a functional aspect. The studies included analysis of neuronal and glial neurotrophin gene expression, that was investigated by using molecular biological techniques. READ MORE

  5. 5. Changes in sensory systems during aging : an experimental study in the rat

    Author : Esbjörn Bergman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : aging; behavior; primary sensory neuron; dorsal root ganglion; mystacial pad; sensory nerve ending; axon dystrophy; neuropeptides; B4; RT97; CTB; neurotrophins; trk; p75NTR; GFR[alpha]; RET; protein; mRNA;

    Abstract : Aging is associated with sensorimotor disturbances, including increased proprioceptive thresholds. The present study aimed to clarify the occurrence of structural and biochemical alterations in sensory systems of behaviorally characterized aged rats. READ MORE
