    Abstract : In this thesis, bio-nanocomposites made from two alternative biopolymers and montmorillonite (Mnt) clay have been investigated by molecular modelling. These biopolymers are xyloglucan (XG) and chitosan (CHS), both of which are abundant, renewable, and cost-effective. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nuclear magnetic resonance studies on bentonite in complex mixed systems

    University dissertation from Luleå : Luleå tekniska universitet

    Author : Alexander S. Goryan; [2012]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bentonite; montmorillonite; 23Na; 31P; 29Si NMR; interaction; ion exchange; sorption; Chemistry of Interfaces; Gränsytors kemi;

    Abstract : In this work 23Na MAS NMR was validated as a successful quantitative method for studies of exchanging sodium in bentonites useful, in particular, for studies of ion-exchange kinetics. Na-enriched bentonites equilibrated in a re-circulated process water at iron-oxide pelletizing plants may acquire properties of Ca-bentonites after already 20 minutes of the equilibration time, since >50 % of sodium ions will be exchanged by calcium ions during first minutes of bentonite placed in contact with the process water. 3. 3. The Bentonite Barrier - Swelling Properties, Redox Chemistry and Mineral Evolution

    University dissertation from Centre for Analysis and Synthesis

    Author : Daniel Svensson; [2015]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; montmorillonite; bentonite; smectite; freezing; thawing; hydration; intercalation; four-water-layer; ethylene glycol; X-ray diffraction; time-resolved; spatial-resolution; XANES; Fe; redox; iron; ABM; TBT; Äspö;

    Abstract : Bentonite is planned for use as a buffer material in high-level radioactive waste repositories, where safety assessment is performed for very long periods (100-1000 ka). This thesis focuses on the swelling of smectites in liquid water, and analysis of bentonite from field experiments at Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory, Sweden. READ MORE

  4. 4. Synchrotron X-ray Scattering and Monte Carlo Simulations of Structure and Forces in Silicate Nanoplatelet Dispersions

    University dissertation from Lund University, Center for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Theoretical Chemistry

    Author : Mo Segad; [2014]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAXS; MC simulations; Swelling; Tactoids; EXAFS; DLS; Cryo-TEM; Nanoplatelets; MX80; Na Ca montmorillonite.;

    Abstract : Clays are the world’s most widely used natural material, however, little is known regarding the microstructure as well as the forces involved in clay-water interactions, and their influence on the swelling properties. The utilization of clay platelets is nowadays a key in a number of biological and industrial applications e.g. READ MORE

  5. 5. Swelling and Microstructure of Nanoplatelet Systems

    University dissertation from Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry, Theoretical Chemistry

    Author : Axel Thuresson; [2017]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nanoplatelets; Model clay system; Coarse grained models; Statistical mechanics; MC simulations; MD simulations; SAXS; Cryo-TEM; Laponite; Montmorillonite; Swelling; Tactoid;

    Abstract : Many clay minerals consist of charged nanoplatelets that swell in an aqueous solution. The swelling and the microstructure depend on the type of clay mineral but are also dependent on, for example, the ionic composition and the temperature of the solution. READ MORE
