  1. 1. Effect of metal ion irradiation on hard coating synthesis by physical vapor deposition

    Author : Tun-Wei Hsu; Magnus Odén; Grzegorz Greczynski; Sven Ulrich; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to understand and control how the ions in the plasma influence the film growth during thin film deposition processes. Two physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques are investigated, namely magnetron sputtering and cathodic arc evaporation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cr Vaporization and Oxide Scale Growth on Interconnects in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

    Author : Hannes Falk Windisch; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Corrosion; Interconnect; Cr Vaporization; SOFC; Coatings;

    Abstract : The vaporization of Cr(VI) species and the greater electrical resistance caused by a growing oxide scale are probably the two most detrimental degradation mechanisms associated with the use of Cr2O3-forming alloys as the interconnect material in a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC). High electrical efficiency, clean emissions and the possibility to utilize several types of fuels, such as hydrogen, alcohols and hydrocarbons are some of the great advantages of SOFC technology. 3. 3. Grinding effects on surface integrity, flexural strength and contact damage resistance of coated hardmetals

    Author : Jing Yang; Magnus Odén; Luis Llanes; Andrew Gant; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The tribological and mechanical behavior of coated tools depends not only on intrinsic properties of the deposited film but also on substrate surface and subsurface properties – such as topography and residual stress state – as well as on interface adhesion strength. It is particularly true in the case of coated tools based on WC-Co cemented carbides (backbone materials of the tool manufacturing industry, and simply referred to as hardmetals in practice) as substrates. 4. 4. Engineering Epitaxial Graphene for Quantum Metrology

    Author : Hans He; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Epitaxial Graphene; Magnetotransport; Quantum Resistance Metrology; Chemical Doping;

    Abstract : Quantum resistance metrology deals both with the precise and accurate measurement of electrical resistance, by utilizing the quantum hall effect (QHE) in two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) such as those based on gallium arsenide (GaAs). Due to the unique properties of graphene, and specifically epitaxial graphene grown on silicon carbide (SiC/G), quantum Hall resistance (QHR) standards based on graphene perform better in a wider parameter space (temperature, current and magnetic field) than conventional semiconducting materials. 5. 5. Mechanical and thermal stability of hard nitride coatings

    Author : Yu-Hsiang Chen; Magnus Odén; Lina Rogström; Tomasz Liskiewicz; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Hard coating’s thermal stability is essential due to the high temperature environment of high-speed cutting applications, while the phase and microstructure evolution induced by exposing the coating to high temperature affects the mechanical properties. In this thesis, the mechanical stability of arc-evaporated, hard, transition metal nitride coatings annealed at high temperature is analyzed and related to the phase and microstructure evolution.
