1. Mixture toxicity of pesticides and biological effects in agricultural streams : field and laboratory studies
Abstract : The main objective of this thesis was to examine pesticide mixture toxicity and its effects on aquatic biota in agricultural streams. This was accomplished by (1) calculating the ΣTUs for algae and Daphnia magna and a pesticide toxicity index (PTI) based on water quality standards (WQS) for long-term monitoring data (2002-2010), (2) by performing algal inhibition tests with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, using both collected in situ water samples and reconstituted water spiked with field-observed pesticide mixtures, and (3) by studying seasonal changes in macroinvertebrate and diatom communities during 2008 in four agricultural streams and determine a set of community-based metrics such as species richness, diversity, ASPT, SPEAR and IPS. 2. Modelling Evolution : From non-life, to life, to a variety of life
Abstract : Life is able to replicate itself, e.g., a microorganism is able to divide into two identical ones, and a single plant is able to forest a whole island. READ MORE

3. Inference of Hierarchical Structure in Complex Systems
Abstract : Hierarchical organization is a central property of complex systems. It is even argued that a system is required to be hierarchical in order to evolve complexity within reasonable time. A hierarchy of a system is defined as the set of self-contained levels at which the system operates and can be described on. READ MORE

4. Intramolecular isotope analysis reveals plant ecophysiological signals covering multiple timescales
Abstract : Our societies' wellbeing relies on stable and healthy environments. However, our current lifestyles, growth-oriented economic policies and the population explosion are leading to potentially catastrophic degradation of ecosystems and progressive disruption of food chains. READ MORE

5. Worse than Complex
Abstract : This thesis engages with questions on the boundary between what has traditionally been understood as social and natural. The introductory essay contextualizes the specific contributions of the included papers, by noting and exploring a reinvigoration of "naturalism" (the notion of a continuity between the human realm and the rest of natural phenomena) under the banner of Complexity Science.
