1. Photoelectrochemical Processes on Fe2O3 Based Model Anodes
Abstract : One possibility to partially satisfy the ever-increasing energy needs of modern society, without compromising the Earth’s environment through e.g. global warming, consists in harvesting solar energy and storing it as hydrogen produced from water splitting. This can potentially be achieved on a large scale using photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. READ MORE

2. Nanomagnetic and Micromagnetic Properties of Rocks Minerals and Sulphide Oxidation Products
Abstract : Magnetic and related properties of rocks and products from oxidation of sulphide minerals have been investigated with magnetisation measurements (rocks and oxidation products), magnetic force microscopy (rocks), scanning electron microscopy (rocks and oxidation products), transmission electron microscopy (oxidation products), Mössbauer spectroscopy (oxidation products) and powder X-ray diffraction (oxidation products). The investigations have shown the following: During thermal oxidation of pyrite (cubic FeS2) and marcasite (orthorombic FeS2) in air, nano-crystals of a-Fe2O3 and g-Fe2O3 were formed. READ MORE

3. Highly Efficient CIGS Based Devices for Solar Hydrogen Production and Size Dependent Properties of ZnO Quantum Dots
Abstract : Materials and device concepts for renewable solar hydrogen production, and size dependent properties of ZnO quantum dots are the two main themes of this thesis.ZnO particles with diameters less than 10 nm, which are small enough for electronic quantum confinement, were synthesized by hydrolysis in alkaline zinc acetate solutions. 4. Dissolved Organic Matter from a colloidal perspective
Abstract : Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is considered the most bioavailable fraction of soil, and thus play a key role in the cycling of carbon. Because of its mobility, DOM also forms the connection between terrestrial and aquatic systems, and constitutes an important vector for nutrients and contaminants. READ MORE

5. Nanoplasmonic Enhancement of Photon-to-Electron Conversion in Functionalized Iron Oxide Photoanodes
Abstract : The ever increasing energy demand of modern society clashes with the accelerating depletion of the fossil fuels from which most of this energy is taken today. Moreover, fossil fuels consumption poses a severe threat on the Earth’s environment and climate through global warming. READ MORE
