  1. 1. Export and sources of organic carbon in the Lena River basin, Northeastern Siberia

    Author : Liselott Kutscher; Carl-Magnus Mörth; Per Andersson; Don Porcelli; Peter Raymond; Sebastian Sobek; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic carbon; DOC; POC; organic matter; NOM; DOM; POM; Lena River; organsikt kol; DOC; POC; organiskt material; NOM; DOM; POM; Lenafloden; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Abstract : Permafrost areas are considered to be one of the largest terrestrial storages of carbon. In a warming climate these areas are expected to experience changes in carbon transport to rivers and the oceans due to permafrost thawing, which could enhance erosion, change water flow pathways and increase greenhouse gas emissions. 2. 2. Removal of natural organic matter by enhanced coagulation in Nicaragua

    Author : Indiana García; Luis Moreno; Olle Wahlberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; drinking water; surrogate parameters; enhanced coagulation; natural organic matter; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : The existence of trihalomethanes (THMs) in a drinking water plant of Nicaragua has been investigated in order to see whether the concentration exceeded the maximum contaminant level recommended by the environmental protection agency of the United States (USEPA) and the Nicaragua guidelines. The influence of pH, temperature, chlorine dose and contact time on the formation of THMs were studied. READ MORE

  3. 3. Characterization of aluminum in environmental systems using X-ray absorption and vibrational spectroscopy : The importance of organic matter

    Author : Kristoffer Hagvall; Torbjörn Karlsson; Per Persson; Lars Lövgren; Dan Berggren Kleja; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The fate and behavior of many metals in the environment are highly dependent on interactions with natural organic matter (NOM), which is abundant in most soils and surface waters. The complexation with NOM can influence the speciation of the metals by affecting their hydrolysis and solubility. READ MORE

  4. 4. Interactions between Fe and organic matter and their impact on As(V) and P(V)

    Author : Anneli Sundman; Per Persson; Thomas Borch; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; XAS; Fe III ; As V ; P V ; natural organic matter; Fe II; III -NOM complexes; Krycklan catchment; Earth Sciences with Specialization Environmental Analysis; geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys;

    Abstract : Iron (Fe) speciation is important for many biogeochemical processes. The high abundance and limited solubility of Fe(III) are responsible for the widespread occurrence of Fe(III) minerals in the environment. READ MORE

  5. 5. Optical sensors in drinking water production : Towards automated process control in relation to natural organic matter

    Author : Claudia Cascone; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Access to safe and clean drinking water is a basic human right (A/RES/64/292). In Sweden, large drinking water treatment plants use mainly surface water as water source. The long-term trend of increasing natural organic matter (NOM) in boreal and north European surface waters negatively affects the overall performance of the treatment processes. READ MORE
