    Abstract : The compounds of the title system are reviewed with emphasis on their crystal structures. The principles used in describing them include not only the well-known concept of crystallographic shear in ReOg and the concomitant notion of block structures but also new applications of the idea of chemical twinning of an ReO^-type structure on the unit cell level.     Abstract : This thesis describes and explains the use of aqueous polyoxometalates (POMs), as molecular building blocks in the fabrication of tunable solid-state materials, such as thin films.  Microwave irradiation in the synthesis of Nb10, Nb6 and Ta6 is a rapid and efficient alternative to conventional hydrothermal methods, while offering equal – if not greater yields – of product.     Abstract : People suffering from certain types of arrhythmia may benefit from the implantation of a cardiac pacemaker. Pacemakers artificially stimulate the heart by applying short electrical pulses to the cardiac tissue to restore and maintain a steady heart rhythm. By adjusting the pulse delivery rate the heart is stimulated to beat at desired pace. READ MORE
