  1. 6. Regulation of energy metabolism in tumor cells : the role of hexokinase

    Author : Firoz Kabir; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neoplasms; metabolism;

    Abstract : Changes in glucose metabolism are among the most universal andfundamental metabolic alterations observed in cancer cells. Hexokinase isthe initial regulatory enzyme which controls the rate of glucose entranceinto the glycolytic pathway. The content of hexokinase in tumor cells iselevated, and most of the enzyme is bound to mitochondria. READ MORE

  2. 7. Aspects on local recurrence after rectal cancer surgery

    Author : Karl Kodeda; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rectal neoplasms; Neoplasms recurrence; local; Methodology; Rectal washout; Rectal irrigation; Anterior resection; Quality assurance registry; Follow-up; Array-CGH; Tumour DNA;

    Abstract : Background: Local recurrence after rectal cancer surgery has a profound impact on affected patients’ lives. The overall aim of this thesis was to acquire a deeper understanding of local recurrence after rectal cancer surgery, with a long-term hope of minimising the incidence and mitigating the effects. Abstract : Pain treatment is a crucial aspect in the care of children with cancer and several studies demonstrate inefficient pain treatment. The general aims of the thesis were to identify the current pain problems in pediatric oncology, and to see whether specific interventions could improve the situation. READ MORE

  4. 9. Early life influences on adult organ function, health and disease, including data from Swedish population-based cohorts

    Author : Shantanu Sharma; Internmedicin - epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; EPIDEMIOLOGY; Preconception care; Cardiovascular biomarkers; birth weight; gestational age; neoplasms; lipoprotein; prenatal care; pulse wave analysis;

    Abstract : Prenatal insults or adverse events during the in-utero period may lead to suboptimal function of adult organs because of the impairment of critical organ development and growth, as linked to lower birth weight. This may ultimately predispose the individual to the later onset of some diseases in adulthood, a process known as Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). READ MORE

  5. 10. MRI at 3 T of brain functions and fibre tracts adjacent to intracranial tumors

    Author : Danielle van Westen; Lund Diagnostisk radiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering; radiology; tomography; Clinical physics; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; somatosensory cortex; diffusion magnetic resonance imaging; neoplasms; Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging;

    Abstract : The aims of the studies were: to evaluate the spatial resolution of fMRI at 3 T by studying fingersomatotopy in area 3 b of the primary sensory area (Paper 1); to investigate the potential of fMRI at 3T as a clinical tool for preoperative evaluation of patients with intracranial tumors (Paper 2); to investigate the effect of glioma resection on the spatial extent of fMRI activation as compared to the normal within-subject variability (Paper 3); to determine whether the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA) can distinguish tumor-infiltrated edema of gliomas from pure edema of meningiomas and metastases (Paper 4). Results: Strict somatotopic organisation in the primary sensory cortex was shown in the group average; at the subject level the thumb was located laterally, anteriorly and inferiorly to the little finger in 94 % of subjects (Paper 1).
