  1. 1. Cervical Radiculopathy: A Study With Selective Nerve Root Blocks

    Author : Leif Anderberg; Neurokirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; orthopaedics; Contrast distribution; Nerve root block; Cervical radiculopathy; Kirurgi; traumatology; Treatment; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : Cervical radiculopathy is diagnosed by history, clinical examination of the patient and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine. In many of the patients undergoing this diagnostic strategy, the nerve root/roots responsible for the radicular pain is difficult to define as clinical examination and MRI investigation does not provide information enough. 2. 2. Cortical plasticity in response to median nerve trauma

    Author : Lotta Fornander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Median nerve injuries in adults, repaired with nerve suture, lead to incomplete functional recovery despite improved surgical technique. This results in a reduction in quality of life, poorer working ability and a considerable expense for society. Misrouting of axons at the suture site connects regenerating axons to the wrong distal end organs. READ MORE

  3. 3. Bilateral neurogenic mechanisms following acute unilateral inflammation

    Author : Indre Bileviciute-Ljungar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : bilateral changes; host defence reaction; contralateral treatment; dorsal root reflexes; cross-spinal reflexes; substance P; neurokinin A; calcitonin gene-related peptide; neuropeptide Y; nociception; inflammation; carrageenan; edema; hindpaw withdrawal latency; microdialysis; hot-plate test; Randall Selitto test;

    Abstract : The contribution of neurogenic mechanisms to inflammation has been extensively studied during the last decade, but provides no clear understanding of the bilateral changes commonly seen following unilateral stimulation. This work demonstrates that bilateral neurogenic mechanisms are a part of general host defence reactions following acute unilateral challenge, for the first time revealing that local anaesthetics applied contralaterally, might be used for therapeutic purposes in relieving pain and inflammation. 4. 4. Genetic variations influencing susceptibility to multiple sclerosis

    Author : Kristina Duvefelt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease affecting approximately 12 000 individuals in Sweden. Epidemiological studies have shown that most likely several genetic variations contribute and interact with each other as well as with environmental factors in the development of MS. READ MORE
