1. Production Ergonomics: Identifying and managing risk in the design of high performance work systems
Abstract : Poor ergonomics in production systems can compromise performance and cause musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which pose a huge cost to society, companies, and afflicted individuals. This thesis presents a research trajectory through the problem space by: 1) Identifying and quantifying workplace risk factors for MSDs, 2) Identifying how these risks may relate to production strategies, and 3) Developing an approach to integrating ergonomics into a companies’ regular development work. 2. Transformative Decision Rules : Foundations and Applications
Abstract : A transformative decision rule alters the representation of a decisionproblem, either by changing the sets of acts and states taken intoconsideration, or by modifying the probability or value assignments.Examples of decision rules belonging to this class are the principleof insufficient reason, Isaac Levi’s condition of E-admissibility, Luceand Raiffa’s merger of states-rule, and the de minimis principle. 4. Directional Decomposition in Anisotropic Heterogeneous Media for Acoustic and Electromagnetic Fields
Abstract : Directional wave-field decomposition for heterogeneousanisotropic media with in-stantaneous response is establishedfor both the acoustic and the electromagnetic equations. We derive a sufficient condition for ellipticity of thesystem's matrix in the Laplace domain and show that theconstruction of the splitting matrix via a Dunford-Taylorintegral over the resolvent of the non-compact, non-normalsystem's matrix is well de ned. 5. Analysis of the Robin-Dirichlet iterative procedure for solving the Cauchy problem for elliptic equations with extension to unbounded domains
Abstract : In this thesis we study the Cauchy problem for elliptic equations. It arises in many areas of application in science and engineering as a problem of reconstruction of solutions to elliptic equations in a domain from boundary measurements taken on a part of the boundary of this domain.
