    Author : Anna Wuolikainen; Peter M Andersen; Henrik Antti; Stefan L Marklund; Thomas Moritz; Thomas Hankemeier; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ALS ; motor neuron disease; Lou Gehrig’s disease; human disease; CSF; biomarkers; metabolomics; metabonomics; chemometrics; design of experiments; multivariate analysis.; Neurology; Neurologi; Neurology; neurologi;

    Abstract : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Charcot’s disease, motor neuron disease (MND) and Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a deadly, adult-onset neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive loss of upper and lower motor neurons, resulting in evolving paresis of the linked muscles. ALS is defined by classical features of the disease, but may present as a wide spectrum of phenotypes. READ MORE

  2. 7. Parkinson’s Disease and Communication : Intelligibility, Interaction and Participation

    Author : Inga-Lena Johansson; Nicole Müller; Christina Samuelsson; Christina Reuterskiöld; Margaret Walshe; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Parkinson’s disease; Intelligibility; Speech acoustics; Interaction; Communicative participation; Communication partner;

    Abstract : Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting dopamine production in the basal ganglia. It is a common cause of disability among elderly people. The main symptoms are tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia, but there is a substantial individual variation of how the disease manifests itself. READ MORE

  3. 8. Mass Spectrometry of Non-protein Amino Acids : BMAA and Neurodegenerative Diseases

    Author : Liying Jiang; Leopold Ilag; Jonas Bergquist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neurodegenerative diseases; BMAA; Isomers; LC-MS MS; Cyanobacteria; Diatoms; Seafood contamination; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : Neurodegenerative diseases have been shown to correlate positively with an ageing population. The most common neurodegenerative diseases are amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. READ MORE

    Abstract : Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia among elderly. The disease is characterized by amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, loss of synapses and neurons and chronic neuroinflammation. READ MORE

  5. 10. Mitochondria in Alzheimer's Disease : The Presequence Protease and Mitochondria-Associated ER Membranes

    Author : Catarina Moreira Pinho; Elzbieta Glaser; Paolo Bernardi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alzheimer s Disease; Mitochondria; Mitochondria-associated ER membranes; human Presequence Protease; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent age-related neurodegenerative disorders and the accumulation of the amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) in the temporal lobe has been implicated in the pathology of AD. Synaptic transmission in neuronal cells is a highly energy dependent process, which relies on the presence and proper function of mitochondria. READ MORE
