  1. 1. Neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunction : Clinical aspects in children with spinal dysraphism

    Author : Peter Wide; Karel Duchén; Sven Mattsson; Gunilla Glad Mattsson; Sivert Lindström; Maria Hertelius; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Spinal dysraphism (SD) is a congenital malformation that to a varying extent, often severely, affects the life of the child and the family. Most individuals with SD suffer from neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunction—with the risk of urinary tract infections, renal deterioration, urinary and fecal incontinence—that affects social participation and quality of life negatively. 2. 2. Bilateral neurogenic mechanisms following acute unilateral inflammation

    Author : Indre Bileviciute-Ljungar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : bilateral changes; host defence reaction; contralateral treatment; dorsal root reflexes; cross-spinal reflexes; substance P; neurokinin A; calcitonin gene-related peptide; neuropeptide Y; nociception; inflammation; carrageenan; edema; hindpaw withdrawal latency; microdialysis; hot-plate test; Randall Selitto test;

    Abstract : The contribution of neurogenic mechanisms to inflammation has been extensively studied during the last decade, but provides no clear understanding of the bilateral changes commonly seen following unilateral stimulation. This work demonstrates that bilateral neurogenic mechanisms are a part of general host defence reactions following acute unilateral challenge, for the first time revealing that local anaesthetics applied contralaterally, might be used for therapeutic purposes in relieving pain and inflammation. 3. 3. Neurogenic and inflammatory response in the rodent brain following stroke

    Author : Ursula Heldmann; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inflammation; Mac-1-saporin; TNF-a; Neurogenesis; Microglia; stroke; aging;

    Abstract : Stroke and in this case cerebral infarction affects 20 million people each year and five million of them die. In Sweden 30-35000 people will be affected and one of three of them will be severely disabled. In addition, one of six will suffer a new stroke within six years. READ MORE

  4. 4. Endogenous activators of the pain receptor TRPV1 From cell to man

    Author : Pouya Movahed Rad; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; cannabinoids; capsazepine; N-acylethanolamines; anandamide; blood Circulation; vasodilation; humans; calcitonin Gene-related Peptide; capsaicin; neurogenic inflammation; nociceptors; TRPV1 protein; pain;

    Abstract : N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) belong to a growing family of endogenous signalling molecules acting on a variety of receptors and ion channels. In 1992, it was reported that the N-acylethanolamine anandamide is present in the brain and activates the central cannabinoid (CB) receptor. READ MORE

  5. 5. Hemorphins and endomorphins

    Author : Katarina Sanderson Nydahl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical biosciences; Hemorphins; endomorphins; opioid receptors; peptide metabolism; neurogenic inflammation; pain; Farmaceutisk biovetenskap; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci; biologisk beroendeforskning; Biological Research on Drug Dependence;

    Abstract : In this thesis, two newly discovered endogenous opioid peptide families, the hemorphins and endomorphins, are investigated with emphasis on modulation of pain and inflammation. In addition, the presence of hemorphins in human biological fluids as well as the in vitro and in vivo processing ofLVV-hemorphin-7 in blood and brain is investigated. READ MORE
