  1. 1. Synaptic Integration of Hippocampal Neurons Generated in the Adult Brain: Influence of a Pathological Environment

    University dissertation from Neurology, Lund

    Author : Katherine Jakubs; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2007]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Neurologi; synaptic plasticity; GABA; glutamate; GFP; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; hippocampus; dentate gyrus; neurogenesis; LPS; inflammation; epilepsy; SE; patch-clamp;

    Abstract : The adult brain constantly produces new neurons from endogenous neural progenitor cells located in at least two regions, the subgranular zone (SGZ) in dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, and the subventricular zone (SVZ). Major efforts are underway to discover the functional significance of new neurons in the adult brain. READ MORE

  2. 2. Experimental Stroke and Neurotrophins: Regulation, function and gene transfer of neurotrophins in rat and mouse models of focal cerebral ischemia

    University dissertation from Restorative Neurology, Wallenberg Neuroscience Center, University Hospital, 221 84 Lund, Sweden

    Author : Gunnar Andsberg; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2001]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; Neurology; animal behaviour; striatum; stereology; immunohistochemistry; focal cerebral ischemia; nerve growth factors; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Stroke caused by focal cerebral ischemia is a major cause of death and neurological disability in humans. The forebrain region most commonly affected by ischemic incidents is that supplied by the middle cerebral artery. READ MORE

  3. 3. Role of Neuropeptides and Neurotrophic Factors in Seizure Modulation

    University dissertation from Avtandil Nanobashvili, Section of Restorative Neurology, WNC, BMC A11, 221 84 Lund

    Author : Avtandil Nanobashvili; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2003]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; brain slice; entorhinal cortex; hippocampus; galanin; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor; neuropeptide Y; epilepsy; kindling; Neurology; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Neurologi;

    Abstract : The presented thesis explores role of glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor family receptor a2 (GFRa2), as well as neuropeptide Y (NPY) and galanin and their receptors in modulation of seizure activity. We demonstrate that mice lacking the GFRa2 gene (GFRa2-/-) exhibit suppressed seizure generalization in traditional and rapid kindling models. READ MORE

  4. 4. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke

    University dissertation from Andreas Arvidsson, Section of Restorative Neurology, Wallenberg Neuroscience Center, BMC A-11, SE-221 84, Lund

    Author : Andreas Arvidsson; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2003]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stereology; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; BrdU; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; subventricular zone; striatum; dentate gyrus; neuronal replacement; neuronal survival; Focal cerebral ischemia; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor;

    Abstract : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 5. 5. Multiple Sclerosis: Studies of the Interferon system and search for infectious agents

    University dissertation from Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Lund University

    Author : My Bergkvist; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2005]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; neuropsychology; Neurology; Axon and myelin damage; IgG; Virus; Interferon; Multiple Sclerosis; Genetic linkage;

    Abstract : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system, characterized by focal inflammatory lesions with demyelination and axonal loss. It is believed that MS is an immune-mediated disorder with both genetic and environmental contributions to the pathogenesis. READ MORE
