  1. 1. Neurotrophic factors and neuronal plasticity

    Author : Sten Linnarsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The neurotrophic factors were originally discovered because of their ability to rescue neurons during a period of naturally occurring programmed cell death. This gave rise to the neurotrophic factor hypothesis which states that specific target-derived factors protect and support subpopulations of innervating neurons, thereby regulating the pattern and quantity of innervation properly for each target tissue. 2. 2. Neurotrophic Factor Receptors in the Normal and Injured Visual System : Focus on Retinal Ganglion Cells

    Author : Niclas Lindqvist; Finn Hallböök; Anders Kvanta; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; cell survival; gene expression; neurotrophic factor; receptor; retina; visual system; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; Developmental Neurosciences; Medicinsk utvecklings- och neurobiologi;

    Abstract : The focus of this thesis is the life and death of adult retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). RGCs are neurons that convey visual information from the retina to higher centers in the brain. READ MORE

  3. 3. Regeneration of Peripheral Nerves. The role of protein kinases, with emphasis on neurotrophic factor stimulation

    Author : Peter Wiklund; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NT-4; NT-3; NGF; MAPK; PKG; PKA; PKC; nodose ganglion; DRG; conditioning effect; neurotrophic factors; protein kinases; peripheral; nerve regeneration; BDNF; GDNF; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of protein kinases in peripheral nerve regeneration, with the use of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and nodose ganglia explants from adult mice. The effects of neurotrophic factor stimulation and protein kinase inhibition were studied for long (days) and short term (minutes) effects. READ MORE

  4. 4. Dysfunction in the nigrostriatal system : effects of L-DOPA and GDNF

    Author : Nina Nevalainen; Ingrid Strömberg; Nancy Zahniser; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Parkinson’s disease; L-DOPA; dyskinesia; GDNF; dopamine; glutamate; serotonin; medicinsk utvecklings- och neurobiologi; Developmental Neurosciences;

    Abstract : Parkinson’s disease is a common neurodegenerative disorder caused by nigrostriatal dopamine loss, with motor deficiencies as the primary outcome. To increase the striatal dopamine content, patients are treated with 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-l-alanine (l-DOPA). READ MORE

  5. 5. The effects of neurotrophic substances on primary sensory neurons following peripheral nerve injury

    Author : Petri Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : DRG; dorsal horn; NGF; BDNF; NT-3; substance P; calcitonin gene-related peptide; fluoride-resistant acid phosphatase; carbonic anhydrase; microglia; astroglia;

    Abstract : Sensory impulses from the periphery is transmitted by primary sensory neurons located in dorsal root and cranial nerve ganglia. The primary sensory neurons are phenotypically diverse with regard to their expression of various chemical components. READ MORE
