  1. 1. Recreating the microenvironment of the neurovascular unit

    Author : Isabelle Matthiesen; Anna Herland; Thomas E. Winkler; Stéphanie Descroix; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; microphysiological systems; neurovascular unit; induced pluripotent stem cells; extracellular matrix; hydrogels; in vitro models; mikrofysiologiska system; neurovaskulära enheten; inducerade pluripotenta stamceller; extracellulära matrisen; hydrogeler; in vitro modeller; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : The neurovascular unit (NVU) comprises the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) and its surrounding astrocytes, pericytes and neurons that are embedded in the extracellular matrix (ECM). As the main function of the BBB is to protect the brain from inlet of pathogens and toxins, the specialized endothelial cells that keep the barrier tight will also hinder the passage of pharmaceuticals. 2. 2. Translational Aspects of Blood-Brain Barrier Transport and Brain Distribution of Drugs in Health and Disease

    Author : Sofia Gustafsson; Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes; Stina Syvänen; Irena Loryan; Danica Stanimirovic; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Blood-brain barrier; Neurovascular unit; Pharmacokinetics; Neurodegenerative disease; Drug transport; Brain tissue binding; Positron emission tomography; Brain regions; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Pharmaceutical Science;

    Abstract : A high unmet medical need in the area of CNS diseases coincides with high failure rates in CNS drug development. Efficient treatment of CNS disease is constrained by limited entrance of drugs into the brain owing to the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which separates brain from blood. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on pericytes in health and disease

    Author : Maya Hestnes Nisancioglu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Pericytes are the perivascular mural cells of microvessels. They are intimately associated with endothelial cells and communicate with them via direct physical contact or through paracrine signaling pathways. These interactions are important for blood vessel maturation, remodeling, and maintenance. READ MORE

  4. 4. tPA mediated activation of PDGF-C/PDGFRα signaling in the CNS

    Author : Christina Stefanitsch; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The platelet derived growth factors (PDGFs) and their tyrosine kinase receptors play an essential role during development, in adult tissue homeostasis and in several pathological events. PDGF-CC, a ligand for PDGFRα, is secreted as an inactive dimer. READ MORE

  5. 5. MAPK and pro-inflammatory mediators in the walls of brain blood vessels following cerebral ischemia

    Author : Aida Maddahi; Lund Medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mitogen activated protein kinase; iNOS; Matrix metalloproteinases; IL-1ß; IL-6; TNF-α; Inflammation; Subarachnoid hemorrhage; Middle cerebral artery occlusion;

    Abstract : INTRODUCTION Stroke is a serious neurological disease which may lead to death and severe disability [1, 2]. There are two major types of stroke: ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. READ MORE
