  1. 1. Protein stabilization. Some methods and mechanisms

    Author : Maria Andersson; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; sorbitol; protein stability; preferential exclusion; polyol; poly-NIPAAm; polymer; poly ethyleneimine ; polyelectrolyte; oxidation; NMR spectroscopy; lysozyme; lactate dehydrogenase; fluorescence; dynamic light scattering; complex; additive; circular dichroism; stabilization; trypsin; thermo-reversible polymer.; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : The effect of different additives on protein stability was studied, and the basis for stabilization was investigated at molecular level. The addition of sorbitol enhanced thermal stability of hen egg white lysozyme in aqueous solution. READ MORE

  2. 2. Specific Precipitation of Biomolecules Using Synthetic Polymers

    Author : Per-Olof Wahlund; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biotechnology; Polymerteknik; RNA; plasmid DNA; DNA; polyelectrolyte complexes; synthetic polymers; precipitation; affinity precipotation; Bioteknik; Polymer technology; biopolymers;

    Abstract : Purification is a very important stage in biotechnological processes. The traditionally used precipitation techniques are generally nonspecific and thus one or more chromatographic steps are normally required. There is thus a need for new approaches to improve existing techniques. READ MORE

  3. 3. Synthesis of nanostructured and hierarchical materials for bio-applications

    Author : Fei Ye; Mamoun Muhammed; Andreas Fisher; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fe3O4; mSiO2; core-shell; MRI; multifunctional; PNIPAAm; LCST; gold; nanorod; nitric acid; AR; MDDC; biocompatibility; immunomodulation; Materials chemistry; Materialkemi;

    Abstract : In recent years, nanostructured materials incorporated with inorganic particles and polymers have attracted attention for simultaneous multifunctional biomedical applications. This thesis summarized three works, which are preparation of mesoporous silica coated superparamagnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4@mSiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) as magnetic resonance imaging T2 contrast agents, polymer grafted Fe3O4@mSiO2 NPs response to temperature change, synthesis and biocompatibility evaluation of high aspect ratio (AR) gold nanorods. 4. 4. From Responsive Interfaces to Honeycomb Membranes by Controlled Radical Polymerisation

    Author : Daniel Nyström; Anders Hult; Søren Hvilsted; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Isoporous membranes; Silica nanoparticles; ATRP; Functional surfaces; cellulose; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : In this study, surface modification of both organic and inorganic substrates (in terms of cellulose and silica nanoparticles, respectively) has been explored using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP). The desire to modify bio-based materials to fit into new application areas and the need for bio-based materials with improved material properties is steadily increasing due to environmental concern.
