  1. 1. The cerebral circulation in preeclampsia : abnormalities in autoregulation and perfusion

    Author : Michael A Belfort; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : preeclampsia; eclampsia; autoregulation; cerebral perfusion pressure; Doppler; central retinal artery; ophthalmic artery; middle cerebral artery; magnesium sulfate; nimodipine; headache; scotomata;

    Abstract : Background: Eclampsia continues to be a major cause of maternal death. Abnormal cerebral blood flow and autoregulation may play an important role in the causation. Doppler ultrasound now allows assessment of the pathophysiology of preeclampsia, and the mechanisms of action of drugs used to treat it. READ MORE

  2. 2. Blood pressure in acute ischaemic stroke : blood pressure and stress in the acute phase of stroke and influence of initial blood pressure on stroke-outcome

    Author : Niaz Ahmed; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Stroke; cerebral ischaemia; cerebral infarction; brain infarction; cerebrovascular disorder; blood pressure; hypertension; stroke classification; stroke subtypes; clinical trials; stress; cortisol; glucocorticoid; nimodipine; Calcium channel blockers; outcome; OCSP; RCT;

    Abstract : Background and objectives: Most patients (70-80%) with acute ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke exhibit a high systemic blood pressure (BP) on admission to hospital even in the absence of a history of hypertension (=50%). In matched-control patients admitted to hospital for other acute diseases the proportion of high BP is only 36%. READ MORE

  3. 3. Nitric oxide in brain contusion

    Author : Caroline Gahm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Apoptosis; Colchicine; Dexamethasone; eNOS; human; immunohistochemistry; iNOS; L-NAME; L-NIL; neuronal degeneration; Nimodipine; nitric oxide; NO; nNOS; rat; SPBN; Tirilazad Mesylate; traumatic brain injury;

    Abstract : Trauma to the brain is a leading cause of death and disability. The primary injury initiates a cascade of biochemical reactions in the brain that causes further neuronal damage, a process referred to as secondary brain injury. READ MORE

  4. 4. Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury

    Author : Jonas Hydman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve is accompanied by a poor functional recovery of the target organ, the larynx. For the patient this means impairments of vocal fold mobility and various kinds of voice disorders. READ MORE

  5. 5. Intracranial facial nerve lesion : experimental study on neural degeneration and its treatment

    Author : Per Mattsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to develop an experimental model that would generate extensive motor neuronal degeneration in adult rats, and furthermore to study mechanisms causing nerve cell death and effects of putative neuroprotective compounds. The facial nerve was chosen because it is well characterized and allows evaluation of functional recovery by analyzing vibrissae movements. READ MORE
