  1. 11. Picophytoplankton seasonal dynamics in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Javier Alegria Zufía; Hanna Farnelid; Catherine Legrand; Nathan Ahlgren; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; picophytoplankton; Synechococcus; picoeukaryote; phycoerythrin; phycocyanin; ammonium; nitrate; 16S rDNA; flow cytometry; grazing; viral lysis; seasonality; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Abstract : Picophytoplankton (15°C there was a preference for ammonium over nitrate. Clade A/B dominated the SYN community, except during summer at the coastal station when low nitrate and warm temperatures promoted S5.2 dominance. Grazing was observed to control SYN and PPE abundances and had an effect on the SYN community structure. READ MORE

  2. 12. Nitric Oxide Exchange in Central and Peripheral Airways : Determinants in Health and Respiratory Disease

    Author : Andrei Malinovschi; Christer Janson; Kjell Alving; Lena Holm; Elisabeth Bel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : exhaled nitric oxide; alveolar NO; bronchial NO flux; extended NO analysis; asthma; smoking; snus; IgE-sensitization; pharyngo-oral tract; nitrate; nitrite; pulmonary hypertension;

    Abstract : Background: Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) is a marker of eosinophilic steroid-sensitive inflammation in the airways of patients with respiratory disease. Moreover, information about the localization of inflammation in the respiratory tree is obtained by estimates of bronchial and alveolar contributions to exhaled NO. READ MORE

  3. 13. Atmospheric Chemistry of Volatile Organic Compounds: Oxidation Products, Mechanisms and Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation

    Author : Julia Hammes; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SOA; VOC; anthropogenic; biogenic; FIGAERO; CIMS; HOMs; ELVOCs; atmospheric oxidation; chemical mechanism; NOx; limonene; a-pinene; TMB; ozone; nitrate; OH; radical chemistry; RO2; G-FROST; GO:PAM;

    Abstract : The results from this work are a piece in understanding the complex puzzle of atmospheric aerosol formation. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed by the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the atmosphere is a key component of air pollution with a strong negative impact on human health and influence on climate, but its formation is poorly understood. 4. 14. Phytostabilization of mine tailings covered with fly ash and sewage sludge

    Author : Clara Neuschütz; Maria Greger; Lena Kautsky; Anthony R. Dexter; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ammonium; biosolids; cadmium; copper; energy crop; metal and nutrient leakage; nitrate; phosphate; phytoremediation; plant stress response; root exudates; zinc; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Establishing plant communities is essential for the restoration of contaminated land. As potential cover materials, fly ash and sewage sludge can prevent formation of acid mine drainage from sulfidic mine waste. READ MORE

  5. 15. Biogeochemical Processes in Denitrifying Woodchip Bioreactors and their Application in the Mining Industry

    Author : Albin Nordström; Roger Herbert; Fritjof Fagerlund; Gunno Renman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; water treatment; mine drainage; nitrate; nitrous oxide; DNRA; fermentation; syntrophy; temperature; kväverening; gruvvatten; nitrat; lustgas; DNRA; fermentation; syntrofi; temperatur; Hydrology; Hydrologi;

    Abstract : This thesis evaluates passive denitrifying woodchip bioreactors (DWBs) for the removal of nitrate (NO3-) in neutral pH mine drainage, where water is passed through a carbon-rich porous matrix (e.g. woodchips) for the reduction of NO3- to nitrogen gas. READ MORE
