  1. 6. Studies of EHEC and the complement system in renal diseases

    Author : Zivile Békassy; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; EHEC; hemolytic uremic syndrome; thrombotic microangiopathy; atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome; alternative pathway of complement; dense deposit disease; eculizumab;

    Abstract : This thesis addressed the diagnosis, pathogenesis and clinical course of specific renal diseases hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and dense deposit disease (DDD). HUS may be associated with infection caused by Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) or with complement dysfunction due to complement mutations or auto-antibodies (atypical HUS, aHUS). READ MORE

  2. 7. Transvascular fluid exchange with application to the brain. An experimental study in cat skeletal muscle and brain

    Author : Lis Kongstad; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; Neurology; intensivvård; capillary filtration coefficient; Capillary permeability; reflection coefficient; brain edema; dural puncture; Anaesthesiology; Anestesiologi; intensive care; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : This study evaluated transcapillary fluid exchange in the cat brain and in a cat skeletal muscle enclosed in a plethysmograph. A method for determination of capillary permeability (capillary filtration coefficient and reflection coefficient) and effects of transcapillary hydrostatic pressure changes were studied We found that capillary fluid permeability in a tissue can be determined by the capillary filtration coefficient, even when arterial pressure and vascular tone are changed. 3. 8. Mechanisms behind the lipid-lowering effects of ACTH - Studies in different experimental models

    Author : Maria Skoog; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Lipid; ACTH; Apolipoprotein-B; Cholesterol; Human; Rat; Rabbit; Medicin människa och djur ;

    Abstract : Abstract Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) has strong and direct lipid-lowering effects in man. All apoB-containing lipoproteins, i.e. VLDL, LDL, Lp(a), are reduced by 25-30%. READ MORE

  4. 9. Primary Aldosteronism Screening and Diagnosis in Primary Health Care

    Author : Christina Westerdahl; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; hypertension; primary health care; aldosterone; primary aldosteronism; fludrocortisone; aldosterone to renin ratio; renin; captopril;

    Abstract : Arterial hypertension is a very common disorder. In most cases the cause is unknown and therefore classified as essential or primary hypertension. Primary aldosteronism (PA), characterized by an inappropriate aldosterone secretion, has traditionally been estimated to account for approximately 1 % of all hypertensive cases. READ MORE

  5. 10. Novel insights into the role of serotonin in control of β-cell fuction

    Author : Hedvig Bennet; Celiaki och diabetes; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Inadequate insulin secretion is a central component in the development of Diabetes Mellitus, resulting from reduced pancreatic β-cell mass, as well as diminished β-cell function. Islet produced 5-hydroxy tryptamine (5-HT) is suggested to regulate insulin secretion and β-cell mass in rodents during pregnancy and in metabolically challenged states. READ MORE
