1. Non-equilibrium thermodynamics at the microscopic scales
Abstract : An inherent feature of small systems in contact with thermal reservoirs, be it a pollen grain in water, or an active microbe flagellum, is fluctuations. Even with advanced microscopic techniques, distinguishing active, non-equilibrium processes defined by a constant dissipation of energy to the environment from passive, equilibrium processes is a very challenging task and a vastly developing field of research. 2. Probing Magnetism at the Atomic Scale: Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics Theoretical Treatise
Abstract : Here, I present a theoretical study, based on non-equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics and on the non-equilibrium extension to the RKKY intveraction, where I investigate the emergence of magnetism at the atomic scale in adsorbed molecular complexes hosting localized spin moments, at the stake of being probed with scanning tunneling microscopy tip, and being driven by a temperature gradient and gated by an electric field. The scanning tunneling microscopy set up is modeled as a molecular junction with a magnetic molecule embedded within it, where the molecule consists in a set of electronic levels resembling the typical s-p orbitals of a metal hydride or an organometal, and a localized spin moment resembling the magnetic unit hosted by the latter and former type of molecules mentioned. 3. Equilibrium and Dynamics on Complex Networkds
Abstract : Complex networks are an important class of models used to describe the behaviour of a very broad category of systems which appear in different fields of science ranging from physics, biology and statistics to computer science and other disciplines. This set of models includes spin systems on a graph, neural networks, decision networks, spreading disease, financial trade, social networks and all systems which can be represented as interacting agents on some sort of graph architecture. 4. The Struggles of Light Bound in Matter : Modelling Optical Excitations in Nanostructures
Abstract : This thesis addresses three different topics on the interaction between light and matter in open quantum systems. The first topic concerns two-dimensional spectroscopy and the spectral contributions from different nonlinear action signals with a focus on how to differentiate between them. READ MORE

5. Thermoelectric phenomena in low-dimensional semiconductor systems
Abstract : This thesis investigates thermoelectric effects, predominantly in low-dimensional semiconductors. Various novel phenomena are predicted, investigated and discussed. READ MORE
