  1. 1. Solitary waves and enhanced incoherent scatter ion lines

    Author : Jonas Ekeberg; Lars Eliasson; Kristof Stasiewicz; Jan Trulsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plasma waves and instabilities; nonlinear phenomena; solitons and solitary waves; ionosphere; Sun: corona; incoherent scatter radar; MHD; plasmavågor och instabiliteter; ickelinjära fenomen; solitoner och solitära vågor; jonosfär; solen: korona; inkoherent spridningsradar; MHD; Geocosmophysics and plasma physics; Geokosmofysik och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; Plasma physics; Plasmafysik; Non-linear dynamics; chaos; Icke-linjär dynamik; kaos; fysik; Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses solitary waves and their significance for auroral particle acceleration, coronal heating and incoherent scatter radar spectra. Solitary waves are formed due to a balance of nonlinear and dispersive effects. READ MORE

  2. 2. The growth of waves by wind as a problem in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics

    Author : Anthony Bonfils; John Wettlaufer; Kristian Gustafsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; out-of-equilibrium system; fluctuation spectrum; oscillatory force; classical Casimir effect; non-linear waves; wave turbulence; wind-wave coupling.; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : In 1948, Casimir predicted a net attractive force between two perfectly conducting parallel plates due to electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations. By analogy, the interaction of two ships on a wavy sea has been named Maritime Casimir effect. This is an example of force generation in non-equilibrium systems. READ MORE

  3. 3. Structural Behaviour in Concrete Frame Corners of Civil Defence Shelters Non-linear Finite Element Analyses and Experiments

    Author : Morgan Johansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; blast load; non-linear finite element analyses; reinforcement detailing; spliced reinforcement; frame corners; civil defence shelters; impact load; concrete;

    Abstract : From a safety point of view it is important that a concrete structure, apart from necessary load capacity, also is able to show ductile behaviour that allows redistribution of forces so that a local failure not lead to total collapse of the structure. A structure's ability to exhibit such behaviour is highly dependent on the reinforcement detailing of the joint connections between its independent members. READ MORE

  4. 4. A Play of Light and Spins: Excitation and Detection of Non-linear Magnetization Dynamics using Light

    Author : Shreyas Muralidhar; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; spin waves; laser-induced magnetization dynamics; Brillouin light scattering; Spin Hall nano-oscillators; neuromorphic computing; Ising machines;

    Abstract : The excitation and detection of magnetization dynamics play key roles in the field of spintronics and magnonics. In this thesis, we investigate a contactless method of exciting nonlinear magnetization dynamics using a femtosecond pulsed laser, and study the same with a Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) microscope. 5. 5. Wave Loads on Offshore Wind Power Plants

    Author : Jenny Trumars; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ocean engineering; shallow water; fatigue; Non-linear waves; wave load; wind energy converter; perturbation theory;

    Abstract : The thesis gives a short introduction to waves and discusses the problem with non-linear waves in shallow water and how they effect an offshore wind energy converter. The focus is on the realisation of non-linear waves in the time domain from short-term statistics in the form of a variance density spectrum of the wave elevation. READ MORE
