  1. 1. Dynamics of astaxanthin, tocopherol (Vitamin E) and thiamine (Vitamin B1) in the Baltic Sea ecosystem : Bottom-up effects in an aquatic food web

    Author : Norbert Häubner; Pauli Snoeijs; Jon Ågren; Rhena Schumann; Markku Viitasalo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Baltic Sea; carotenoids; astaxanthin; tocopherols; Vitamin E; thiamine; Vitamin B1; pelagic food web; eutrophication; M74; phytoplankton; zooplankton; sprat; Sprattus sprattus balticus; herring; Clupea harengus; salmon; Salmo salar; cod; Gadus morhua; High Performance Liquid Chromatography HPLC ; electrochemical detection ECD ;

    Abstract : The thesis combines laboratory experiments and field expeditions to study production, transfer and consumption of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thiamine in an aquatic food web. In particular, I (1) documented spatial and seasonal variation of tocopherols and carotenoids in the Baltic Sea pelagic food web, and (2) examined the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on tocopherol, carotenoid and thiamine concentrations in phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish. 2. 2. Tundra meets atmosphere : Seasonal dynamics of trace gas exchange in the High Arctic

    Author : Norbert Pirk; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic; tundra; methane; carbon dioxide;

    Abstract : Arctic environments have experienced strong warming in recent decades, which is affecting the carbon cycle of tundra ecosystems.Degrading permafrost, diminishing snow cover, and changing hydrology are examples of ongoing processes that affect the land-atmosphere interactions and seasonal ecosystem dynamics. 3. 3. Comprehensive assessment of device-based therapy for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction

    Author : Benedikt Norbert Schrage; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Despite a recommendation by the European guidelines, the use of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) for the primary prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is scarce. This might be explained by a lower risk of SCD in contemporary patients with HFrEF, so that the need for primary prevention ICD use in these patients has been questioned. READ MORE

  4. 4. Towards aquatic assessment of Lake Tumba, DR Congo

    Author : Lingopa Norbert Zanga; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The livelihoods of most communities around the 765 km2 Lake Tumba are dependent on fish from the lake. Artisanal fishing and other pressures on the aquatic ecosystem are likely to have increased over the last half century. However, few monitoring programs follow these pressures and their influence on the aquatic ecosystem. READ MORE

  5. 5. Immunologic aspects of the pathogenesis of human onchocerciasis

    Author : Magdi Mahmoud Ali; Klavs Berzins; Norbert Brattig; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Immunology; Immunologi;

    Abstract : Onchocerciasis, or river blindness, is a parasitic disease that affects more than 20 million people globally. The induction of pathology is directly related to the presence and destruction of the microfilarial stages (mf) of this filarial nematode. READ MORE
