  1. 1. Studies of Nuclear Fuel by Means of Nuclear Spectroscopic Methods

    Author : Peter Jansson; Roland Carchon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Radiation sciences; irradiated nuclear fuel; nuclear spectroscopy; tomography; safeguard; Strålningsvetenskap; Radiation biology; Strålningsbiologi; Kärnfysik; Nuclear Physics;

    Abstract : The increasing demand for characterization of nuclear fuel, both from an operator and authority point of view, motivates the development of new experimental and, preferable, non-destructive methods. In this thesis, some methods based on nuclear spectroscopic techniques are presented. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies of Cherenkov light production in irradiated nuclear fuel assemblies

    Author : Erik Branger; Sophie Grape; Anders Hjalmarsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DCVD; Cherenkov light; Geant4; Nuclear fuel; Nuclear safeguards; Fysik med inriktning mot tillämpad kärnfysik; Physics with specialization in Applied Nuclear Physics;

    Abstract : The Digital Cherenkov Viewing Device (DCVD) is an instrument used by authority inspectors to assess irradiated nuclear fuel assemblies in wet storage for the purpose of nuclear safeguards. Originally developed to verify the presence of fuel assemblies with long cooling times and low burnup, the DCVD accuracy is sufficient for partial defect verification, where one verifies that part of an assembly has not been diverted. 3. 3. A Tomographic Measurement Technique for Irradiated Nuclear Fuel Assemblies

    Author : Staffan Jacobsson Svärd; Anders Bäcklin; Ane Håkansson; Klaas van der Meer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nuclear physics; tomography; nuclear fuel; SPECT; core physics; validation; pin power; safeguards; partial-defect verification; Kärnfysik; Nuclear physics; Kärnfysik;

    Abstract : The fuel assemblies used at the Swedish nuclear power plants contain typically between 100 and 300 fuel rods. An experimental technique has been demanded for determining the relative activities of specific isotopes in individual fuel rods without dismantling the assemblies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Enhancing the performance of the Digital Cherenkov Viewing Device : Detecting partial defects in irradiated nuclear fuel assemblies using Cherenkov light

    Author : Erik Branger; Sophie Grape; Christopher Orton; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DCVD; Nuclear safeguards; Cherenkov light; Nuclear fuel assembly; Partial defect verification; Fysik med inriktning mot tillämpad kärnfysik; Physics with specialization in Applied Nuclear Physics;

    Abstract : The Digital Cherenkov Viewing Device (DCVD) is an instrument used by authority safeguards inspectors to verify irradiated nuclear fuel assemblies in wet storage based on Cherenkov light emission. It is frequently used to verify that parts of an assembly have not been diverted, which is done by comparing the measured Cherenkov light intensity to a predicted one. READ MORE

  5. 5. Gamma Spectroscopy and Gamma Emission Tomography for Fuel Performance Characterization of Irradiated Nuclear Fuel Assemblies

    Author : Scott Holcombe; Staffan Jacobsson Svärd; Hans-Urs Zwicky; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nuclear fuel performance; Nuclear fuel assemblies; Gamma emission tomography; Gamma spectroscopy;

    Abstract : Gamma spectroscopy and gamma emission tomography are two non-destructive measurement techniques for assessing the performance of nuclear fuel which have been investigated in this thesis for existing and novel applications through theoretical studies and experimental demonstrations. For assessment of individual fuel rods using gamma spectroscopy, fuel assemblies are dismantled so that the fuel rods may be measured separately, which is time-consuming and may cause damage to the fuel.
