  1. 1. Ab initio driven modeling of advanced nuclear fuels

    Author : Huan Liu; Pär Olsson; Marjorie Bertolus; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fysik; Physics; Kärnenergiteknik; Nuclear Engineering;

    Abstract : With the development of clean energy sources such as nuclear power, it has become more important to use advanced nuclear fuels to improve economic efficiency and expand safety margins. Thanks to the high fissile density, high thermal conductivity, and high melting point, uranium nitride and uranium silicide have been considered accident tolerant or high-performance fuels for commercial light water reactors and for future generation reactor systems. 2. 2. High Performance Fuels for Water-Cooled Reactor Systems

    Author : Kyle D. Johnson; Janne Wallenius; James Tulenko; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Nuclear fuel; accident tolerant fuel; uranium nitride; uranium silicide; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Investigation of nitride fuels and their properties has, for decades, been propelled on the basis of their desirable high metal densities and high thermal conductivities, both of which oer intrinsic advantages to performance, economy, and safety in fast and light water reactor systems. In this time several key obstacles have been identied as impeding the implementation of these fuels for commercial applications; namely chemical interactions with air and steam, the noted diculty in sintering of the material, and the high costs associated with the enrichment of 15N. 3. 3. Open porosity fission gas release model applied to nuclear fuels

    Author : Antoine Claisse; Pär Olsson; Arndt Schubert; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Nitride fuels have gained a new interest in the last few years as both a candidate for GEN IV reactors and as accident tolerant fuels for current light water reactors. They however are decades behind oxide fuels when it comes to qualication and development of tools to assess their performances. In this thesis, such a tool is developed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Production and Characterization of ZrN and PuN Materials for Nuclear Fuel Applications

    Author : Marcus Hedberg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Internal gelation; Carbothermal reduction; Zirconium Nitride; Plutonium Nitride; Nuclear fuel;

    Abstract : At the heart of a nuclear reactor resides its fuel. The chemical composition of the nuclear fuel affects the performance of several key properties important for the overall operation and safety performance of the reactor. READ MORE

  5. 5. Water-in-diesel emulsion and microemulsion fuels: composition, structure and effect on emissions

    Author : Anna Lif; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NOx; microemulsion; combustion; diffusometry; alternative fuels; emission; emulsion; Fischer-Tropsch; MFC; PM; microfibrillated cellulose; NMR; surfactant; soot; diesel;

    Abstract : Water-in-diesel fuels, as emulsions and microemulsions, give reduced emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) in combustion in diesel engines compared to regular diesel. These fuels can contribute to an improved local environment in densely populated areas as they can replace regular diesel in existing vehicles without any engine modification requirements. READ MORE
