  1. 16. Modeling disturbances of cholinergic systems : possible relevance for schizophrenia

    Author : Anna Mattsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cholinergic; nucleus basalis; 192 IgG-saporin; schizophrenia; locomotor activity; dopamine; microdialysis; memory; MRI;

    Abstract : Schizophrenia is a severe, chronic mental disorder. The etiology remains unknown but alterations in cholinergic neurotransmission is one, among other, disturbances in the brain that have been implicated in schizophrenia. READ MORE

  2. 17. 5-HT1A receptor ligands with putative antidepressant activity : pharmacological studies in the rat

    Author : Lotta Arborelius; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : antidepressants; citalopram; dopamine; dorsal raphe nucleus; electrophysiology; frontal cortex; 5-HT; A receptors; microdialysis; serotonin; rat;

    Abstract : Several studies suggest that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)IA receptor agonists possess antidepressant activity. Probably these agents exert their therapeutic effect through stimulation of postsynaptic 5-HT,A receptors. READ MORE

  3. 18. Effects of nicotine on mesolimbocortical dopaminergic neurotransmission : a pharmacological study in the rat

    Author : Magnus Nisell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : nicotine; dopamine; ventral tegmental area; accumbens; prefrontal cortex; c-fos; drug-dependence; sensitization; mecamylamine; D; receptors; SCH 23390;

    Abstract : Tobacco-smoking represents a form of drug addiction to nicotine (NlC) and the reinforcing and dependence-producing properties of NIC depend largely on central dopamine (DA) neurons, located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and projecting mainly to the nucleus accumbens (NAc; mesolimbic DA system) and the medial prefrontal cortex (PFC; mesocortical DA system). Generally, the mesolimbic DA system plays a pivotal role in the reinforcing effects of natural rewards as well as of drugs of abuse. READ MORE

  4. 19. Nicotinic effects on midbrain dopamine neurons : a dual mechanism of action

    Author : Björn Schilström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : nicotine; dopamine; ventral tegmental area; glutamate; microdialysis; Fos expression; NMDA receptor; presynaptic;

    Abstract : The neurons of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system are located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) in the mesencephalon and send their projections to forebrain structures, such as the prefrontal cortex, the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens. The dopamine system is important in regulating mood and motivation as well as cognitive function and appear to be primarily involved in drug dependence, since most drugs abused by man stimulate this system. 5. 20. Neurochemical and behavioral studies on ethanol and brain opiod interactions in the brain

    Author : Sara Lindholm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Substance dependence is a devastating disorder that produces enormous socio-economic costs, personal tragedies and health related problems. The brain mesolimbic dopamine pathway originating in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) with projections to limbic brain structures such as the nucleus accumbens has been implicated in the reinforcing effects of different drugs of abuse.
