16. Absorbing Layers and Non-Reflecting Boundary Conditions for Wave Propagation Problems
Abstract : The presence of wave motion is the defining feature in many fields of application, such as electro-magnetics, seismics, acoustics, aerodynamics, oceanography and optics. In these fields, accurate numerical simulation of wave phenomena is important for the enhanced understanding of basic phenomenon, but also in design and development of various engineering applications. 17. Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations in Optimal Design
Abstract : This thesis concerns the approximation of optimally controlled partial differential equations for inverse problems in optimal design. Important examples of such problems are optimal material design and parameter reconstruction. In optimal material design the goal is to construct a material that meets some optimality criterion, e.g. READ MORE

18. Pontryagin approximations for optimal design
Abstract : This thesis concerns the approximation of optimally controlled partial differential equations for applications in optimal design and reconstruction. Such optimal control problems are often ill-posed and need to be regularized to obtain good approximations. READ MORE

19. A numerical study of two-fluid models for dispersed two-phase flow
Abstract : In this thesis the two-fluid (Eulerian/Eulerian) formulation for dispersed two-phase flow is considered. Closure laws are needed for this type of models. We investigate both empirically based relations, which we refer to as a nongranular model, and relations obtained from kinetic theory of dense gases, which we refer to as a granular model. READ MORE

20. A new finite element method for elliptic interface problems
Abstract : A finite element based numerical method for the two-dimensional elliptic interface problems is presented. Due to presence of these interfaces the problem will contain discontinuities in the coefficients and singularities in the right hand side that are represented by delta functionals along the interface.
