  1. 1. Boreal Forest Wildfire in a Changing Climate

    Author : Johan Eckdahl; BECC: Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; boreal forest wildfire; carbon emissions; nutrient cycling; nitrogen; microbial community; plant community; climate chnge; secondary succession; Sweden; Fennoscandia; biodiversity; boreal skogsbrand; koldioxiduttsläpp; näringscykling; kväve; mirkobiellt samhälle; växtsamhälle; klimatförändring; sekundär succession; sverige; Fennoskandien; biologisk mångfald;

    Abstract : The boreal region contains 40% of the earth’s carbon (C) that is stored in vegetation and soils with its forests accounting for almost 30% of the terrestrial C sink. Boreal forests are experiencing some of the most rapid rates of climatic warming and increases in fire activity, threatening to release large amounts of their dense C reserves to the atmosphere. 2. 2. Mechanisms of below-ground carbon cycling in subarctic ecosystems

    Author : Maria Olsrud; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi; pedology; geomorphology; Physical geography; subarctic tundra; phosphorous mobilization; organic acids; open top chamber experiment; 15N natural abundance; Ericoid mycorrhizas; global change; 14C pulse-labelling; Carbon allocation;

    Abstract : Some components of the below-ground carbon (C) cycle in terrestrial ecosystems are still poorly understood. A better understanding will be necessary to predict adequately the impacts of global change factors on C cycling and storage, especially in high-latitude ecosystems, where much of the C is stored below-ground. 3. 3. Biomass, community structure and phosphorus uptake of ectomycorrhizal fungi in response to phosphorus limitation and nitrogen deposition

    Author : Juan Pablo Almeida; MEMEG; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phosphorus and nitrogen limitation; nitrogen deposition; ectomycorrhizal fungi; community composition; apatite; Paxillus involutus; Phosphorus and nitrogen limitation; nitrogen deposition; ectomycorrhizal fungi; community composition; apatite; Paxillus involutus;

    Abstract : High levels of nitrogen (N) deposition might result in a transition from N to phosphorus (P) limitation in high latitude forests. Thiscould have fundamental consequences for forest production, nutrient acquisition and nutrient leaching. READ MORE

  4. 4. Utilization of waste materials for extraction of strategic metals : a biogeochemical approach

    Author : Viktor Sjöberg; Stefan Karlsson; Bert Allard; Mattias Bäckström; Christian Ekberg; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biogeochemistry; ICP-QMS; MP AES; strategic metals; vanadium; uranium; mine waste; steel slag; shale residues; Enviromental Science; Miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Worldwide the modern society produces vast amounts of waste materials containing strategic and valuable metals. Some of them are of substantial economic or environmental significance if controlled recovery of metals can be performed or if uncontrolled release to the environment occurs. READ MORE

  5. 5. Floodplain remediation in agricultural streams : improved process understanding for reduced eutrophication

    Author : Lukas Hallberg; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Anthropogenically modified headwater streams are key pathways for high nutrient and sediment loads from agriculture, sustaining eutrophication and poor water quality in downstream aquatic ecosystems. To address this challenge, stream mitigation strategies are required that complement in-field measures, to intercept internal pollutant loading in streams. READ MORE
