  1. 1. Ultrasound measurement of cervical length in the second trimester of pregnancy for prediction of preterm delivery

    University dissertation from Göteborgs universitet

    Author : Pihla Kuusela; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; [2019]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; preterm delivery; transvaginal ultrasound; cervical length measurement; second trimester; prospective study; observational study; mass screening; reproducibility of results; inter-observer variation; intra-observer variation; data accuracy; quality control;

    Abstract : Abstract Background: Short cervical length is a risk factor for preterm delivery (PTD) and screening of cervical length using transvaginal ultrasound in the second trimester is a proposed method to find women at risk Aims: To examine the potential value of routine measurement of cervical length in a Swedish population of women with singleton pregnancies in the prediction of PTD. To estimate inter- and intra-observer agreement and reliability of cervical length measurements. READ MORE

  2. 2. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia

    University dissertation from Lund University: Faculty of Medicine

    Author : Tibor V Varga; [2016]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetic epidemiology; Genetic polymorphism; dyslipidaemia; Cholesterol; Triglyceride; Genetic risk; genetic risk score; Single nucleotide polymorphism; Prediction; Gene-environment interactions; Randomized controlled trial; prospective cohort studies; Observational study; GLACIER Study; Diabetes Prevention Program;

    Abstract : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 3. 3. Pharmacoepidemiologic Studies of Diabetes Mellitus - with special reference to - Glucose Control and Prognosis of Type 2 Diabetes

    University dissertation from Jonny Olsson, Department of Community Medicine, Malmö University Hospital, SE-205 02 MALMÖ, Sweden

    Author : Jonny Olsson; [2000]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetology; secreting systems; Endocrinology; cohort study; longitudinal study; cross-sectional study; mortality; diabetes mellitus; Pharmacoepidemiology; prevalence; type 2 diabetes; diabetes costs; short-term sick-leave; premature retirement; production losses; inpatient care; glycaemic control; fasting blood glucose; oral antihyperglycaemic agents; sulphonylurea; metformin; insulin; combination treatment; drug utilization; prescribed daily doses; safety; effectiveness; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : The efficacy and safety of antihyperglycaemic drugs have been evaluated in one American and one British randomized clinical trial, which have given contradictory results. The positive results of the latter may be more convincing as it included a greater number of patients and as its duration was longer. READ MORE

  4. 4. Methods for improving covariate balance in observational studies

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå universitet

    Author : Philip Fowler; Xavier de Luna; Ingeborg Waernbaum; Martin Huber; [2017]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; causal effect; coarsening; discretisation; proxy variables; register study; swedish social insurance agency; unobserved variables;

    Abstract : This thesis contributes to the field of causal inference, where the main interest is to estimate the effect of a treatment on some outcome. At its core, causal inference is an exercise in controlling for imbalance (differences) in covariate distributions between the treated and the controls, as such imbalances otherwise can bias estimates of causal effects. Abstract : Knowledge about spatial and temporal variability of hydrological processes is central for sustainable water-resources management, and such knowledge is created from observational data. Hydrologic models are necessary for prediction for time periods and areas lacking data, but are affected by observational uncertainties. READ MORE
