  1. 21. Glaucoma Characteristics and Risk Factors - Results from Malmö Eye Survey

    Author : Kirsti Grødum; Oftalmologi (Malmö); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; vascular disease; Ophtalmology; Oftalmologi; myopia; optic disc hemorrhages; mortality; refraction; glaucoma; population screening;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on data from a large glaucoma screening, comprising 32, 918 elderly citizens of Malmö and data from retrospective analysis of glaucoma patients’ charts from the Eye Department of Malmö University Hospital. The definition of glaucoma was based on reproducible visual field defects and/or glaucomatous optic nerve head damage in both groups. READ MORE

  2. 22. Computerised Three-Dimensional Analysis of Optic Nerve Head Topography in Normal and Glaucomatous Eyes

    Author : Kjell Gunnar Gundersen; Oftalmologi (Malmö); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ranked segment distribution; minimal rim width; sector analysis; neuroretinal rim; global parameters; localised changes; computerised analysis; raster tomography; Optic nerve head topography; scanning laser tomography; Ophtalmology; Oftalmologi;

    Abstract : Evaluation of the optic nerve head topography is one of the most important methods to diagnose and monitor patients with glaucoma. Until recently, optic nerve head topography has most often been judged by either ophthalmoscopy or from optic disc photographs. READ MORE

  3. 23. Clinical Studies on Dark Adaptation: with Particular Reference to Carotid Artery Disease

    Author : Ulf Havelius; Oftalmologi (Malmö); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; polycythemia; photoreceptors; phlebotomy; ocular blood flow; headache; dilation lag; dark adaptometry; dark adaptation; color Doppler imaging; carotid artery stenosis; carotid artery disease; carotid endarterectomy; pupil; pupillometry; retinal blood flow; Ophtalmology; Oftalmologi;

    Abstract : Purpose: To study dark adaptation in patients with symptomatic carotid artery disease or polycythemia before and after treatment. This necessitated determinations of pupillary changes as such may influence the findings. To determine whether changes in the retinal blood flow in light and darkness occur in healthy humans. 4. 24. Hyperglycaemia and diabetic eye complications - a clinical and epidemiological study

    Author : Marianne Henricsson; Oftalmologi (Malmö); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mortality; blindness; cataract surgery; oral antihyperglycaemic agents; hyperglycaemia; insulin treatment; non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus; diabetic retinopathy; insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus; Ophtalmology; Oftalmologi;

    Abstract : Aim: To study the relationship between hyperglycaemia and the onset/progression of retinopathy, blindness/moderate visual impairment or death, as well as the impact of improved glycaemic control on retinopathy in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Methods: Between January 1990 and October 1995 a total of 3,220 diabetic patients were enrolled in a programme for control and screening for retinopathy. READ MORE

  5. 25. rd1 Photoreceptor Degeneration: Photoreceptor Rescue and Role of Metalloproteases in Retinal Degeneration

    Author : Poonam Ahuja Jensen; Allmänmedicin och samhällsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oftalmologi; Ophtalmology; retinal degeneration; Survival factors; metalloproteases;

    Abstract : The thesis is focused on an attempt to delay photoreceptor cell death in the rd1 mouse using Lens Epithelium Derived Growth Factor (LEDGF), Glutathione S-Transferase mu (GST-?? and Glutathione S-Transferase alpha (GST-?? in an organ culture paradigm as well as the role of metalloproteases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors in photoreceptor degeneration (TIMPs). The rd1 mouse model displays a retina degeneration which starts around day 10 with rod photoreceptor cell death. READ MORE
