11. Molecular aspects of pheromone evolution in moths
Abstract : Moths rely on the sense of smell (olfaction) as the main sensory input system in search for potential food sources and in selection of suitable females by males. Specific pheromones are fundamental to the reproductive isolation of species and consequently the olfactory system of moths has evolved to a high level of sensitivity and specificity. READ MORE

12. Chemical signalling in the Drosophila brain : GABA, short neuropeptide F and their receptors
Abstract : Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and short neuropeptide F (sNPF) are widespread signalling molecules in the brain of insects. In order to understand more about the signalling and to some extent start to unravel the functional roles of these two substances, this study has examined the locations of the transmitters and their receptors in the brain of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster using immunocytochemistry in combination with Gal4/UAS technique. 13. Getting to know Trioza apicalis (Homoptera: Psylloidea) – a Specialist Host-Alternating Insect with a Tiny Olfactory System
Abstract : This thesis comprises ecological, morphological and physiological studies of the carrot psyllid Trioza apicalis (Homoptera: Psylloidea) with particular focus on olfaction. Data from inventories of winter habitats suggest that T. apicalis prefer Picea abies over Pinus sylvestris and Juniperus communis as winter hosts. READ MORE

14. Early Information Processing in the Vertebrate Olfactory System : A Computational Study
Abstract : The olfactory system is believed to be the oldest sensory system. It developed to detect and analyse chemical information in the form of odours, and its organisation follows the same principles in almost all living animals - insects as well as mammals. READ MORE

15. Auditory and Olfactory Abilities in Blind and Sighted Individuals : More Similarities than Differences
Abstract : Blind individuals face various challenges in everyday life because of the lack of visual input. However, since they need to rely on the non-visual senses for everyday tasks, for instance, when navigating the environment, the question has been raised as to whether perceptual and cognitive abilities in these senses may be enhanced.
