  1. 21. Effects of Enterovirus Infection on Innate Immunity and Beta Cell Function in Human Islets of Langerhans

    Author : Oskar Skog; Gun Frisk; Olle Korsgren; Åke Lernmark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; Enterovirus; Coxsackievirus; Innate immunity; Pancreatic islets; Islet function; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on enteroviral effects on human pancreatic islets. Most knowledge of viral effects on host cells relies on studies of immortalized cell lines or animal models. The islets represent a fundamentally different and less well studied cellular host. Also, enterovirus has been implicated in the etiology of type 1 diabetes (T1D). READ MORE

  2. 22. Technical challenges in human islet isolation

    Author : Magnus Ståhle; Olle Korsgren; Andrew Friberg; Federico Bertuzzi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Transplantation of islets of Langerhans is an effective treatment option for patients with brittle type 1 diabetes mellitus. This treatment restores glucose control and also reduces hypoglycemia. Unfortunately, the outcome from islet isolations is variable, and many preparations do not yield sufficient islet number or islet quality. READ MORE

  3. 23. Cytomegalovirus Infection in Immunocompetent and Renal Transplant Patients : Clinical Aspects and T-cell Specific Immunity

    Author : Fredrik Sund; Britt-Marie Eriksson; Olle Korsgren; Halvor Rollag; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cytomegalovirus; renal transplantation; cellular immunity; valacyclovir; mismatched; prophylaxis; tetramer; CD4 T cells; CD8 T cells; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a β-herpesvirus that, after primary infection, establishes a life-long persistence in the human host. Up to 90% of humans are infected with CMV, that is kept under control by CMV-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T cells. In patients with an impaired cellular immunity, however, CMV infections can be life-threatening. READ MORE

  4. 24. Herpesvirus Infection and Immunity in Neurocognitive Disorders

    Author : Gabriel Westman; Britt-Marie Eriksson; Martin Ingelsson; Olle Korsgren; Jan Ernerudh; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; Herpes simplex encephalitis; Herpesvirus; Cytomegalovirus; CMV; HSV-1; HHV-6; CD8 T-cells; Cellular immunity; Immunosenescence; Autoimmunity; NMDA receptor; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Herpesviruses have co-speciated with several vertebrate and invertebrate animals throughout the history of evolution. In the immunocompetent human host, primary infection is usually benign, whereafter the virus is brought into life-long latency. READ MORE

  5. 25. Immunopathology of the Pancreas in Type 1 Diabetes

    Author : Anna Wiberg; Olle Korsgren; Oskar Skog; Åke Lernmark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; glucagon; T cells; autoantibodies; glucose transporters; islets of Langerhans; pancreas; Klinisk immunologi; Clinical Immunology;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) results from a loss of functional insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. The etiology of T1D is poorly understood, but the detection of infiltrating inflammatory cells in the pancreas and circulating autoantibodies has led to the common notion that an autoimmune process plays a central role in the pathogenesis of the disease.
