  1. 1. Do excellent engineers approach their studies strategically? : A quantitative study of students' approaches to learning in computer science education

    Author : Maria Svedin; Olle Bälter; Stefan Hrastinski; Martha Cleveland-Innes; Johan Thorbiörnson; Arnold Pears; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Approaches to learning; computer science engineering education; Computing education research; online learning; Human-computer Interaction; Människa-datorinteraktion;

    Abstract : This thesis is about students’ approaches to learning (SAL) in computer science education. Since the initial development of SAL instruments and inventories in the 70’s, they have been used as a means to understand students’ approaches to learning better, as well as to measure and predict academic achievement (such as retention, grades and credits taken) and other correlating factors. 2. 2. Image Processing, Machine Learning and Visualization for Tissue Analysis

    Author : Leslie Solorzano; Carolina Wählby; Alexandru Cristian Telea; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Image processing; data analysis; machine learning; visualization; microscopy; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik;

    Abstract : Knowledge discovery for understanding mechanisms of disease requires the integration of multiple sources of data collected at various magnifications and by different imaging techniques. Using spatial information, we can build maps of tissue and cells in which it is possible to extract, e.g. READ MORE

  3. 3. Laws, Attitudes and Public Policy

    Abstract : Paper 1: Do laws affect attitudes? An assessment of the Norwegian prostitution law using longitudinal data The question of whether laws affect attitudes has inspired scholars across many disciplines, but empirical knowledge is sparse. Using longitudinal survey data from Norway and Sweden, collected before and after the implementation of a Norwegian law criminalizing the purchase of sexual services, we assess the short-run effects on attitudes using a difference-indifferences approach. 4. 4. Patterns in big data bioinformatics : Understanding complex diseases with interpretable machine learning

    Author : Mateusz Garbulowski; Jan Komorowski; Ryan J. Urbanowicz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; complex diseases; big data; machine learning; transcriptomics; life sciences; rough sets; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik;

    Abstract : Alterations in the flow of genetic information may lead to complex diseases. Such changes are measured with various omics techniques that usually produce the so-called “big data”. Using interpretable machine learning (ML), we retrieved patterns from transcriptomics data sets. READ MORE
