  1. 1. Micro-Structure Modelling of Acoustics of Open Porous Material

    Author : Eva Lundberg; Peter Göransson; Per Wennhage; Ulf Orrenius; Camille Perrot; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; acoustics; porous material; flow resistivity; micro-structure; anisotropic; foam; strut; Vehicle and Maritime Engineering; Farkostteknik;

    Abstract : Transportation is a large and growing part of the world’s energy consumption. This drives a need for reduced weight of rail vehicles, just as it does for road vehicles. In spite of weight reductions, the vehicle still has to provide the same level of acoustic comfort for the passengers. READ MORE

  2. 2. Finite element modelling of the mechanics of solid foam materials

    Author : Steven Ribeiro-Ayeh; Dan Zenkert; Andrew M. Kraynic; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Engineering design; point-stress criterion; bi-material interface; foam; cellular sollid; micro-mechanical modelling; Konstruktionsteknik; Construction engineering; Konstruktionsteknik;

    Abstract : Failure of bi-material interfaces is studied with the aim to quantify the influence of the induced stress concentrations on the strength of the interfaces. A simple point-stress criterion, used in conjunction with finite element calculations, is evaluated to provide strength predictions for bi-material bonded joints and inserts in polymer foam. 3. 3. Predicting and optimising acoustical and vibrational performance of open porous foams

    Author : Eleonora Lind; Peter Göransson; Wim Desmet; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; porous material; foam; Biot; optimisation; tortuosity; permeability; Acoustics; Akustik;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the modelling of acoustical and vibrational properties of open cell porous foams in multi-layered structures, especially multi-layered panels. The object is to enable optimisation of the microscopic geometry of the foam with respect to macroscopic quantities such as sound pressure level, surface velocity, total mass or cost. READ MORE

  4. 4. Nanofiber networks, aerogels and biocomposites based on nanofibrillated cellulose from wood

    Author : Houssine Sehaqui; Lars A. Berglund; Ton Peijs; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Nanofibrillated cellulose; nanopaper; nanofiber; biocomposites; aerogel; foam; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) from wood is an interesting material constituent of high strength and high aspect ratio, which easily forms networks through interfibril secondary bonding including hydrogen bonds. This has been exploited in preparation of new materials, which extend the range of properties for existing cellulosic materials. READ MORE

  5. 5. Bio-inspired cellulose nanocomposites and foams based on starch matrix

    Author : Anna Svagan; Lars A. Berglund; Salvatore Iannace; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; starch; cellulose nanofibers; foam; nanocomposites; cushioning materials; biodegradable; expanded polystyrene; mechanical properties; diffusion; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : In 2007 the production of expanded polystyrene (EPS) in the world was over 4 million tonnes and is expected to grow at 6 percent per year. With the increased concern about environmental protection, alternative biodegradable materials from renewable resources are of interest. READ MORE
