  1. 1. Liquid Crystalline SIloxane Dimers - Advanced Materials with Enhanced Properties

    Author : Nils Olsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 45 degree tilt angle; dimer; antiferroelectric; fluorinated; siloxane; polymer; liquid crystal; macrocycle; ferroelectric;

    Abstract : The liquid crystal state is a complex state with many kinds of different molecular attractive and repulsive forces that results in various kinds of phases. Since the pioneering works by Vorländer in the early 20th century, liquid crystal research has to a great extent been depending on careful systematic studies of the structure/property relationships in series of similar liquid crystalline materials. 2. 2. Compact Soft X-Ray Microscopy : Sources, Optics and Instrumentation

    Author : Per Takman; Hans Hertz; Janos Kirz; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; soft x-ray microscopy; water window; compact; laser plasma; liquid jet; zone plate optics; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the development of a sub-60-nm full-period resolution compact soft x-ray microscope operating in the water-window region (2.3-4.4 nm). Soft x-ray water-window microscopy is a powerful technique for high-resolution imaging of organic materials exploiting the natural contrast mechanism between carbon and oxygen, cf. READ MORE

  3. 3. Exploring the Surface of Aqueous Solutions : X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies using a liquid micro-jet

    Author : Josephina Werner; Olle Björneholm; Ingmar Persson; Daniel Lundberg; Johan Söderström; Hendrik Bluhm; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy; liquid micro-jet; air-water interface; inorganic salt; carboxylic acid; alcohol; isomers; hydration.; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Abstract : The surface behavior of biologically or atmospherically relevant chemical compounds in aqueous solution has been studied using surface-sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The aim is to provide information on the molecular-scale composition and distribution of solutes in the surface region of aqueous solutions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Vibrational Sum Frequency and Infrared Reflection/Absorption Spectroscopy Studies of the Air/Liquid and Liquid/Metal Interfaces

    Author : Magnus Johnson; Christofer Leygraf; Andrew Gewirth; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Corrosion science; laser spectroscopy; nonlinear optics; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : Atmospheric corrosion, the most common form of metal corrosion, occurs within the interfacial region between a solid, and the surrounding atmosphere. In fact three phases and two interfaces are involved: the gas, a thin liquid layer, a solid, the gas/liquid and the liquid/solid interfaces. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ion pairing and Langmuir-like adsorption at aqueous surfaces studied by core-level spectroscopy

    Author : Victor Ekholm; Olle Björneholm; Jan-Erik Rubensson; Markus Ammann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; XPS; Surface; Aqueous; Liquid jet; Langmuir;

    Abstract : Surface-bulk equilibria for solutes in aqueous solutions are studied using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) with high surface and chemical sensitivity. In the first part, the results show a reduction of the biochemically relevant guanidinium ions’ surface propensity with the addition of disodium sulphate due to ion pairing with the strongly hydrated sulphate ion, which could have implications for protein folding.
