  1. 1. The Influence of Interlayer Exchange Coupling on Magnetic Ordering in Fe-based Heterostructures

    Author : Martin Pärnaste; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Bryan Hickey; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Physics; magnetism; magnetic dimensionality; MOKE; magneto-optics; hydrogen loading; phase transitions; Fysik;

    Abstract : Temperature dependent magnetization measurements were conducted on Fe-based heterostructures. A linear increase of the magnetic critical temperature with increasing Fe thickness was found for Fe/V superlattices with strong interlayer exchange coupling. READ MORE

  2. 2. Ab Initio Simulations of Transition Metal Alloys: Towards the Multiscale Modeling

    Author : Leonid Pourovskii; Igor Abrikosov; Bruce Harmon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; first principles simulations; transition metal alloys; surface segregations; fully-relativistic method; Monte Carlo method; Fysik; Physics; Fysik; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : The present thesis concerns applications of first principles electronic structure calculations in conjunction with methods of statistical mechanics for simulations of transition metal alloys both in the bulk and at surfaces.A fully relativistic generalization of the exact muffin-tin orbitals (EMTO) method has been developed. 3. 3. Tailoring Properties of Materials at the Nanoscale

    Author : Hossein Raanaei; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Igor A. Abrikosov; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Multilayers; magnetic anysotropy; amorphous materials; Magnetism; Magnetism; Materiefysik; Physics of Matter;

    Abstract : The knowledge of growth and characterizing techniques is essential for the preparation of high quality thin films and multilayers. Here, structural properties have been investigated by X-ray reflectivity, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy while the composition was determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. 4. 4. A Theoretical Study of Magnetism in Nanostructured Materials

    Author : Anders Bergman; Olle Eriksson; Lars Nordström; Hugues Dreysse; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; magnetism; clusters; non-collinear; multilayers; first-principles theory; electronic structure; high-moment materials; exchange interactions; linear scaling methods; Fysik;

    Abstract : A first-principles linear scaling real-space method for investigating non-collinear magnetic behaviour of nanostructured materials has been developed. With this method, the magnetic structures of small supported transition metal clusters have been examined. READ MORE

  5. 5. Magnetic and Structural Properties of f-electron Systems from First Principles Theory

    Author : Torbjörn Björkman; Olle Eriksson; Thomas Schulthess; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Fysik; Materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Abstract : A series of studies of f-electron systems based on density functional theory methods have been performed.  The focus of the studies has been on magnetic and structural properties, as well as investigating ways to handle strong electron correlation in these systems. READ MORE
