  1. 1. Integrated Agriculture and Aquaculture Systems (IAA) for Enhanced Food Production and Income Diversification in Tanzania

    Author : Deogratias Mulokozi; Håkan Berg; Ian Bryceson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Smallholder farmers; Oreochromis niloticus; Amaranthus hybridus; food production; household income diversification; water use efficiency; farm net income; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Aquaculture production in Tanzania has increased in recent years, responding to an increased demand for fish, partly because of an increasing population and declining catches of wild fish. However, the current aquaculture production is still low, dominated by small scale farming systems, that are struggling with a number of challenges such as lack of improved fish breeds, feeds, technical skills and low adoption rates. 2. 2. Evaluation of locally available feed resources for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Rwanda

    Author : Leon Niyibizi; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Aquaculture was introduced in Rwanda in the 1940s as an extensive pond-based system but the sector has gained in popularity during the past two decades, resulting in greater numbers of fish ponds and a corresponding increase in demand for quality fish feeds for sustainable aquaculture production. The aim of this thesis was to identify, sample and evaluate the nutritive value of some locally available feed ingredients that could be used by fish farmers producing Nile tilapia. READ MORE

  3. 3. Brewer’s yeast as a protein source in the diet of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) reared in a clear water or biofloc environment

    Author : Huu Yen Nhi Nguyen; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : This thesis investigated the effects of dietary protein replacement of fishmeal or soybean meal with spent brewer’s yeast (SBY) in farmed tilapia and giant freshwater prawns. The effect of rearing tilapia and prawn in two different rearing systems, clear water recirculating aquaculture system (CW-RAS) and biofloc recirculating aquaculture system (Bio-RAS), were also investigated. 4. 4. Occurrence and ecotoxicity of endocrine disruptor chemicals in aquatic environment and sewage treatment systems

    Author : Andre Luis de Sa Salomao; Marcia Marques; Paulo Sergio Martins Carvalho; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Endocrine disruption; Alkali-labile phosphate; Estrogen hormones; Oreochromis niloticus; Unicellular green microalgae; Additive effect; Less-than additive effect; Chronic toxicity; Natural Science; Naturvetenskap;

    Abstract : The applicability of one selected method for indirect measurement of vitellogenin (Vtg) in fish plasma based on the quantification of alkali-labile phosphates (ALP method) to assess estrogenicity in water was investigated. The ALP method applied in this investigation was originally developed with Carassius carassius (Crucian carps). READ MORE
