1. Mechanisms for Solvolytic Elimination and Substitution Reactions Involving Short-lived Carbocation Intermediates
Abstract : Solvolysis reactions of a range of tertiary substrates in largely aqueous solvents were studied in such respects as β-deuterium kinetic isotope effects, linear free energy relationships and stereochemistry.Solvolysis of the fluorene derivatives 9-methyl–9-(2´-X-2´-propyl)fluorene (1-X, X = Cl, Br, OOCCF3) involves a very short-lived carbocation intermediate. 2. Catalytic and Electrocatalytic Transformations with Palladium and Nickel : Scope and mechanistic investigations
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis is based on methodology development and mechanistic investigations using heterogeneous palladium and nickel catalysts. Following the introduction (Chapter 1), Chapter 2 presents a summary of the synthesis and characterization of the MOF-supported Pd catalysts (Pd @ MOF) that are used in this thesis. READ MORE

3. New Strategies for Preparing Polymers with Hierarchical Architectures
Abstract : The objective of this thesis was to explore novel approaches for controlling morphologies and molecular recognition behaviour of polymers and to use these strategies in conjunction with the molecular imprinting technique in order to either enhance polymer performance in quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor applications, or as an alternative to conventional solvents of polymerization. In Papers I and II, the use of liquid crystalline media in the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers was demonstrated. READ MORE

4. Dissolution of cellulose in aqueous hydroxide base solvents
Abstract : As we move towards a circular bioeconomy, new and advanced materials based on cellulose are constantly developed. Unlike most plastics or metals, cellulose cannot be melted, and therefore dissolution is an important tool for processing of cellulose but also for analytical purposes. READ MORE

5. Organic solvents and cognitive functioning. With special reference to interaction with aging
Abstract : The aim of the thesis was to study cognitive functioning in patients with chronic toxic encephalopathy (CTE) and in aging workers previously exposed to organic solvents. The discriminative power of a series of cognitive tests in identifying patients with CTE was examined. READ MORE
